Looking to take a break during the holiday season and curl up with a good book?
Members of the Maris Grove book club recommend The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows.
"It’s a great book," club member Marilyn Crovetto says. Crovetto explains that the book is told in the form of letters between the main character, an author named Juliet, and the residents of Guernsey Island following its occupation by the Nazis during World War II.
"It’s got a great cast of characters and runs you through a full range of emotions—it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s a heartwarming and just a really entertaining book."
Members of the Maris Grove Book Club also recently read The Namesake by author Jhumpa Lahiri and then spent a day at the movies watching the novel-based film.
Crovetto says the book describes the struggles and hardships of an Indian couple who immigrate to the United States to form a life in Massachusetts outside of everything they are accustomed to. "It’s also a good book, and it’s also one of those rare occasions where the movie is cast well and really seems to do the book justice. I highly recommend them both."
