Staycation. Noun. A short vacation spent close to home. “We didn’t want to travel very far this year so we decided to take a staycation and enjoy all our hometown has to offer.”

With soaring gas prices and airfare going through the roof, staycations are quickly gaining popularity among those who want a little break during the summer months.

“We are seeing it right here at Maris Grove,” says the community’s Travel  Coordinator Peggy Fralinger. “More and more of our residents are ditching their long trips to the shore and the excursions across the country to visit friends and family members in exchange for shorter, closer day trips. I think it most certainly has to do with the rising cost of travel.”

A staycation doesn’t mean you have less fun; it just means you don’t have to travel as far, Fralinger says. “And of course we’re so lucky to be in Delaware County—there is so much to do around here. We’re a short trip from so many great destinations.”

‘A dream of a lifetime’
Fralinger, who organizes trips for residents and priority list members of Maris Grove, recently set up a day trip to a Phillies game against the Cincinnati Reds. After the game the residents were able to run the bases at Citizens Bank Park and received a commemorative certificate after crossing home plate. “One resident told me it was a dream of a lifetime,” Fralinger says.

It was Kathleen Maculaitis’ first trip to see a major league game. “The seats were great,” she says. “As a Philly girl I was embarrassed I had never been to a game, but it was something I always wanted to do. If I didn’t live at Maris Grove, I don’t know if I would have ever gone. But Peggy and the  transportation department make it so easy, and they handled all the details—from the tickets to the transportation,” she says. “Having gotten to run the bases, I’ve had an unforgettable experience that few people ever get.”

“We also had a great trip to nearby Chesapeake City and Northeast,  Maryland,” Fralinger says. “We were guided by a local history teacher and learned about the C&D Canal and the history of Saint Mary Anne’s Church.”

When in Rome …
Fralinger explains that  the small, historic church they visited was significant because in a time of intolerance, it had Native American and freed slaves in the congregation. “It was a fascinating history,” Fralinger says. “And we also  learned that Queen Anne gave chalices and patens to 10 churches in the original 13 colonies. All of the other chalices and patens can be seen in museums, but Saint Mary Anne’s still uses theirs every Sunday.”

Fralinger says, while in Chesapeake City, the group stopped to taste some local fare. “Of course while we were there we made it a point to eat at a typical Chesapeake Bay crab house and had what else—crab cake sandwiches!”

Fralinger says because these shorter staycations have become so popular, she is planning a number of unique trips in the upcoming months.

Something for everyone
“Some of our residents have moved to Maris Grove from other parts of the country, and some have been in the area all their lives. But everyone seems to love a day trip,” she says.

She adds that she is always open to suggestions for new trips. “It’s good to take a step outside of your comfort zone and try something new,” she says. “That’s how you gain an interest and learn.”

Attractions near Maris Grove that Fralinger thinks may spur interest and show travelers a good time include the waterworks building that used to supply water to the whole city of Philadelphia and its accompanying restaurant; nearby Port Deposit, Md.; and a field trip to the University of Pennsylvania’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. “We’re hoping to have a docent-led tour about Rome,” Fralinger says.

“After the great time we had at the game,” Maculaitis says, “I’ve vowed to try as many of these day trips as possible.”
