Brushes with fame: Correspondence with McCain |
| | Posted on Tuesday, July 01, 2008 | | | Richard Parsons proudly served his country on an aircraft carrier in World War II in the Pacific. And it was the aircraft carrier he was stationed on, the U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard, CV-31 that facilitated this Maris Grove resident’s brush with fame.
The carrier was christened on April 29, 1944 by U.S. Senator and current Presidential candidate John McCain’s grandmother. A picture commemorating the event was taken and came into Parsons’ possession.
“You can make John McCain out, standing there in the picture, but he was just seven years old,” Parsons says of the McCain family snapshot from the historical
event.
Parsons sent McCain an invitation to the carrier’s reunion and a copy of the photo, beginning a long correspondence with McCain. “We had a lot to talk about,” Parsons says. “He was happy to see the picture, and I believe he even shared it with his mother.”
What resulted was a continuing relationship. “He wrote back, and we’ve corresponded quite a few times,” Parsons says. “Of course we’ve talked about a lot
of things, including how I served under his father. He’s a fine man.”
