When Kathy McCrossin was looking for a job and her father Harry Finerfrock was looking for a home, they both had a lot of questions. But they found all of their answers at the same place.

Both found Maris Grove around the same time. Now Kathy works in the Maris Grove sales office, and her father lives just a short trip down the hallway in the community’s Newlin Pointe residence building.

McCrossin says having her father nearby has been a blessing for both of them. “We consider ourselves both very lucky. We get to see each other all the time. It’s nice having him where I work. It’s been an experience we’ve shared together.”

Finerfrock agrees with everything his daughter says but adds with a laugh, “Let me clarify, I don’t live where she works, she works where I live.”

“It’s great,” McCrossin adds. “I get to see my dad every day and am seeing a whole new  side to him. I see him in a new way, in a different light. And I love it.”

McCrossin takes credit for “discovering” Maris Grove.

She suggested that her  father take a look at the new community that was planned  near her home. After investigation, Finerfrock visited and saw a lot he liked. He joined the Priority List, saving his place in line for a move to the community. After a little more encouragement from his daughter and his four other children, in November 2006 Finerfrock made the move.

A great find
“And it’s been the best decision I’ve ever made,” he says. “This is truly the most fantastic place I can be. The camaraderie here is amazing, and from the employees to the residents everyone is just absolutely upbeat and kind.”

After he moved in, the stories of his admiration of Maris Grove started to fill the conversations between him and his daughter.

“I was beginning to feel compelled to work there,” McCrossin says. “I knew it was a nice place, but I kept hearing ‘Maris Grove this,’ and ‘Maris Grove that’ from my father. So I started thinking, if it is so right for him to live there, why wouldn’t it be right for me to work there?”

A new perspective
McCrossin applied and accepted a position in the sales department. She leads tours of the community for new residents. “I see how my father interacts on campus. It’s fun to see how happy he is, and then share those stories with others. I see another side to Maris Grove that many visitors might not. I can give a true, real-life perspective on what it’s really like to live here.”

McCrossin, who has been with Erickson for two years, was recently promoted to associate director of sales. She agrees with the recent assessment of Maris Grove by the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry and the Central Penn Business Journal that named Maris Grove best employers in Pennsylvania, and with Forbes magazine, which named its parent company, Erickson, one of the top 100 places to work in the nation.

“It’s a great place for my dad to live, and I’m seeing firsthand that it’s an absolutely great place to work,” she says.

What it’s all about
McCrossin says she and her father get a chance to connect almost every day, and she loves to see him so engaged in life, spending time doing things he has always wanted to.

Finerfrock says it has been a great experience for him too. “Since moving here I’ve made the best friends ever, joined the wood shop, and am even involved with a veterans group. I look forward to going to dinner and having a cocktail with friends beforehand. And on top of that, the campus is just a beautiful, beautiful setting. Couple that with having my daughter right down the hall, and you don’t get much better.”

“This is what Maris Grove is all about,” McCrossin says. “It’s a good place. It’s about support. It’s about being involved in life. It’s a community in every sense of the word.”
