If you’re like most Americans, you may have put on a few pounds over the past couple of months. Statistics for how much weight the average American gains during the end-of-the-year festivities vary from one pound to ten.

But there’s nothing to worry about says Maris Grove Wellness Specialist John O’Donnell. He recommends doing any little bit of exercise you can to get back in shape. Whether you join a local fitness center or start taking daily walks, the best  advice is common sense.

“We see people who come in at the start of every year with new sneakers and new workout clothes, and then we only see them once or twice. But it’s not that hard to live a healthier lifestyle,” he says. “Remember that every little bit of exercise you do helps. And if you plan on going to a gym or doing something less formal, keep in mind that consistency is key.”

Start slow
“Don’t be overwhelmed,” O’Donnell says. “You don’t want to lose a ton of weight overnight,” he says. “We try to always start slow, and set realistic,  attainable goals. There is always time to grow those goals.”

And O’Donnell says if you start a new fitness regimen, be sure to keep it well rounded. “You’ll see the best results if you do a little bit of everything. Do a little cardio and a little of the weights, and then throw in some stretching and a healthy diet.”

O’Donnell says many residents at Maris Grove prefer to work out in the community’s state of the art fitness center. “From the treadmills to the recumbent bicycles, we find that every person who works out here has their favorites.”

Technique is everything
But it’s extremely important to use the right technique. “Make sure you’re doing the exercises the right way,” he says. “We always help our residents do the exercises properly to ensure that they don’t hurt themselves, and if you do the exercises correctly, you can also get the most out of a workout.”

Mary Ann Starkey, who lives at Maris Grove, says working out has always been a part of her life. “We were always YMCA members,” she explains. “It really makes you feel better all over—both physically and mentally.”

Reap the benefits
Starkey says the staff in the fitness center makes it fun to be there. “There’s no pressure at all. John keeps you going and keeps the humor up and conversations flowing. There’s always encouragement. I look  forward to going,” she says.

But for some people, O’Donnell says, it takes more than just walking on a treadmill or lifting a few weights. It can take a personal workout plan to get the results they want.

Have a plan
He says he meets with Maris Grove residents on a regular basis to talk about their fitness goals and if needed, maps out a fitness regimen that can help them achieve their desired results.

“We always have our residents meet with a physician first, but after they do, we can discuss their goals and be sure they are doing a program that is right for them.” O’Donnell says residents can complete the workouts on their own or employ the help of a workout “coach” or trainer.

Starkey enjoys the fitness center, but she also takes water aerobics classes and swims on her own time. “The pool is open all the time so you can make it fit your schedule. And I find myself just breezing in and taking a walk on the treadmill whenever I have a free second.”  She adds, “Maris Grove makes it easy to stay fit. You can work out at your own speed and on your own schedule.”

While working out in the fitness center, taking an exercise class, or following an individual fitness plan isn’t for everyone, simply getting out and taking a walk has great benefits too. O’Donnell says to look for every opportunity to stay moving.

Take a walk a day
He says many residents take specialty exercise classes including an indoor pool aerobics class and low-impact yoga that are easier on residents with arthritis and joint problems.

Maris Grove Retirement Counselor Pam Matschat says the community’s marked walking paths are great, but during colder weather many residents just walk around campus using the climatecontrolled walkways. “We have residents who prefer to be in a less formal workout atmosphere,” Matschat says. “I know many residents who just get with a friend or two and take a walk around campus to catch up.”

O’Donnell says, “Just remember, the bottom line is that every little bit of exercise you do is good for you in the long run.”
