Hawthorne home design offers what local couple was looking for

It was a new step, but one the Phillips are happy that they took.

Joyce and Bill Phillips moved in to Maris Grove last October.

And so far, they couldn’t be happier. “We enjoy it here so much,” the couple says about moving to Maris Grove. “It is such a lovely place and everyone is so friendly. You can come and go as you please and there’s so much to keep you busy. You can do as little or as much as you want.”

But it’s the couple’s private sanctuary, away from the activities and clubs that the couple appreciates most. They are happy to call the popular two bedroom, two bath Hawthorne model their home.

“We love it,” Joyce Phillips says. “It feels like home.”

A new style
After living in Swarthmore, Pa., and May’s Landing, N.J., the couple decided that it was time to downsize and considered the new Erickson community in Glen Mills, Pa.

Bill Phillips had worked nearby for years and it just seemed right, his wife explains. “We joined the Priority List late, so we didn’t think there was a chance of getting the style we wanted, but we knew we wanted a two bedroom, two bath model.”

So when Retirement Counselor Pam Matschat called and offered them the Hawthorne a few months later, they were pleasantly surprised and jumped on the opportunity.

Joyce Phillips says it was one of the best decisions the couple has ever made. “As for the layout, there’s no better model,” she explains. “There just isn’t one room we love over the others.”

The kitchen is perfect for preparing breakfast and lunch and they prefer to eat at the community restaurants for dinner. “I don’t like to cook if I don’t have to,” she says.

And they say that the living room is perfect for entertaining “We’ve had plenty of friends and family over and they all seem to really like it,” they both add.

A different use
But there wasn’t an immediate need for the second bedroom. So the Phillips decided to turn it into a more casual den. “We thought we’d get more out of it that way.”

And they have. The couple has welcomed overnight guests to stay there and uses the room every evening for watching television or reading a good book. “We just figured we would use it more that way,” they explain.

The great outdoors, indoors
It’s the connection with the outdoors that the couple appreciates most about the Hawthorne. When the weather warms up, the Phillips are looking forward to opening their windows and letting the fresh air inside.

And they have already had the opportunity to enjoy their view.

There’s plenty of natural light, Joyce Phillips says. “The windows are nice and wide. There’s really no bad view. When you sit down, you see the land in the distance and at night there’s a beautiful view of the moon. This winter we just sat back and enjoyed watching the snow fall. It was truly a beautiful sight.”
