In choosing the perfect community for people 62-plus, sometimes the mindset is that you’ll have to give up something in order to make such a move.

“That may be typical of other communities,” says Julieann Brant, retirement counselor at Maris Grove. “But definitely not here. At Maris Grove, the quality of life and the number of activities you can enjoy will expand.”

A case in point is Maris Grove’s incredible community gardens. Located beyond the Brinton Clubhouse and courtyard, is a stretch of rich-soiled land that will be designated for residents to enjoy gardening. In fact, gardening is so popular at Erickson communities, many have long established Garden Clubs. So “Green Thumbs” alike can immerse their passions by growing whatever they please.

“Before I moved here (to an Erickson community), I had a half-acre garden at my home,” says Charley Gysi, who is president of the Garden Club at nearby Ann’s Choice. “Knowing I could continue to garden at Ann’s Choice certainly made it the right choice. In fact, I took many of my plants and shrubs from my garden at home and replanted them here.”

Surrounded by Color

When Randy Kuser, director of development at Maris Grove, talks about the community gardens he can’t help but sound enthusiastic about what will excite the Pioneers moving to the community this fall.

“It’ll be a breathtaking setting,” says Randy. “Beyond the courtyard behind the clubhouse there will be a great walking path that will wind through the Four Season Orchards down to the magnificent lake. You’ll see beautifully landscaped shrubs, trees, and plenty of flowers. There also will be the community gardens where residents can grow their own fruits, vegetables, flowers—you name it.”

According to Randy each garden plot will be approximately 8' x 8' and have enough room to grow everything from tomatoes to strawberries, and perennials to rosebuds.

A number of Pioneers have already started to think about what they would grow in their own garden at Maris Grove. Ruth, a Maris Grove Pioneer from Aston, has got some definitive ideas.

“I love to cook with fresh herbs,” she says. “So I think I’ll grow some herbs, garlic bulbs, things like that. Imagine being able to season some of my favorite dishes with my own herbs. I I won’t just make herbs for myself either. I’ll give some to the chefs at Maris Grove, too!”

Herbs may sound a little out of the ordinary. But according to Charley, people are planting more than the typical fruits and vegetables. Charley plants flowers and even Bonsai trees in his garden. And he says it won’t be uncommon for people to replant things from their original house to their new home at Maris Grove.

“One of the things that makes Maris Grove so different from other communities is all the opportunities available here,” says Julieann. “We’ll have more amenities, clubs, activities, and overall opportunities to pursue your passion than you’ll find anywhere. Life just gets better here.”
