Big decisions, big rewards

Sometimes the largest life choices are made in one pivotal moment. Such was the case for Marilyn and Fred Pula.

“We looked at each other one day … and said, ‘This is absurd,’” Marilyn Pula says, recalling the moment when she and her husband realized they had outgrown their house. “Everyone in our neighborhood was moving out, and people with young children were moving in. We decided that it was important for us to be in charge of our own destiny.”

A quick search
Soon after the couple started looking to move from their home in Natick, Mass., they landed at Linden Ponds.

“We came over and we looked here and we decided … this was the perfect place for both of us,” Marilyn Pula says. “We never put our names on a priority list; we just walked in the door and put our money down.”

Why move?
The Pulas’ reasons for moving are not uncommon. Many people find as they get older that their neighborhoods are changing and their social opportunities are decreasing. For some, shoveling snow and maintaining a home can become an enormous burden. For others, planning ahead can mean a move.

Before they moved to Linden Ponds, Oliver and Cynthia Rodman were tired of maintaining their Hingham home, and they didn’t want to burden their children if something were to happen to them.

“We didn’t want them to be responsible for older, ailing parents,” Cynthia Rodman says of her forward thinking. “It’s been a very wise move for us,” she adds.

Next steps
Of course, at the point homeowners decide when and where to move, the home selling process begins.

“It is important to take one step at a time, to take a deep breath,” advises Retirement Counselor Marisa Kelley. “There have been tens of thousands of people who have moved to Erickson communities. Keep the reasons for why you’re actually moving in the forefront [of your mind], so you don’t let things stress you out.”

Though the experience is different for everyone, the staff at Linden Ponds works with individuals to support them in both selling their homes and downsizing what they have, which can be the  two most difficult obstacles, Kelley says.

Expert help
Those who choose Linden Ponds have the option of help from Erickson Realty and Moving Services. Personal Move Consultant Lynne Ford can take a look at what people have and help them move. Ford sets up meetings with antique dealers, auctioneers, and philanthropic organizations to find a place for items that won’t fit. She also gives advice to homeowners about what they can do to make their houses more marketable.

“People tend to see downsizing as an overwhelming process,” Kelley says. “But having Lynne’s services makes it more than comfortable.”

When Ford came to visit Marilyn and Fred Pula, she was able to tell them that what they had chosen to bring with them would fit. She also gave them pointers to increase their home’s curb appeal. Based on her advice, the Pulas did some exterior and interior painting.

“It was shortly after that that we sold the house,” Marilyn Pula says.

Big rewards
For Alice Tweedy, who moved to Linden Ponds just a year ago, selling her house was a lengthy process, but not without its rewards.

“Has the expectation been fulfilled? A thousandfold,”Tweedy says of her life at Linden Ponds.

When she first toured the community, Tweedy was most taken with the pool; she now uses it regularly. A lover of music, she also sings with the Linden Ponds Singers and recently performed in a production of the Pirates of Penzance.

“I can’t think of an aspect of the human psyche—body, soul, and mind—that isn’t addressed here,” Tweedy says. “I feel as if I’ve always been here.”

For the Pulas, who lived in their previous house for almost 40 years, Linden Ponds was already home after just a few days.

Marilyn Pula remembers: “We were here three days, we were on the elevator, and I said to Fred, ‘Have you thought about Natick?’ and he said, ‘Not for a minute.’”
