Fore!

With daylight savings time starting earlier this year and air temperatures rising, golfing fever is a sure sign of the arrival of spring.

An enthusiastic group of men and women golfers living at Linden Ponds is embarking on its third season of playing on local courses, lured by their love for the game and an ideal opportunity to socialize and make new friends.

“We are golfers of various talents,” says Glen Crowell, who coordinates the Linden Ponds program with Gordon Maver. “We like to go outdoors and enjoy each other’s company. We’re anxious to get started again.”

According to Crowell, Tina Page, who also lives at Linden Ponds, is organizing the activities of the women’s group again this year.

Maver says approximately three dozen people now participate in the golf program, which operates once weekly from May into October (or later, if the weather cooperates). Men play together on Tuesday mornings, while women hit the links on Thursday mornings.

In 2006, the men’s group played primarily at four courses in the area, but also traveled to clubs in communities as distant as Lakeville and Bridgewater. The women’s group largely limited its activities to courses in two nearby communities.

“We’re still a growing group, but little by little, we’re getting more people involved,” Maver says. “The turnouts vary week by week, but everyone has a good time.”

With the assistance of transportation services at Linden Ponds, golfers travel to local courses weekly for a nominal fee. Tee times are generally reserved starting at 9 a.m. and golfers are usually assigned to different foursomes every time out.

“We want everyone to get to know everyone else and have the chance to play with as many golfers as possible,” Crowell says. “We think this system works well.”

The Linden Ponds golf program was launched in 2005, but was loosely organized without formal coordinators, according to Crowell.

“After the first year, Gordon and I thought we would get together and organize the program,” Crowell says. “We thought we could get it moving and I think we have.”

Crowell and Maver both say the key to the program’s growing popularity is its basic organization.

“We like to play different courses instead of the same course every week, but it’s imperative that Glen and I get out and visit local courses,” Maver says. “We’re still in the process of lining up regular courses for the 2007 season.”

After deciding which courses to frequent, Crowell and Maver arrange schedules and remain in close contact with course officials to minimize potential problems. Golfers are required to confirm participation a few days in advance every week to ensure the groups use their available tee times.

During a preliminary, organizational meeting at Linden Ponds in March, Crowell and Maver laid out scheduling plans for the year, introduced returning members, welcomed new members, discussed several issues related to the program, and answered a host of questions. A major feature introduced this year will be determination of official handicaps, thanks to an available computer software program and hardware on hand at Linden Ponds.

Second annual Golf Outing
Highlighting the 2007 schedule, Crowell says, will be the second annual Linden Ponds Golf Outing for residents and staff to enjoy a full day of golf as well as postevent activities. Last year’s inaugural competition was staged at the South Shore Country Club in Hingham in late summer, and was a rousing success, he says.

“We used a scramble format for the tournament, with a blind draw for partners,” Crowell says. “We all had a great time. We’re hoping for a bigger turnout this year.”

Love of the game
Crowell says participants in the golf program at Linden Ponds share certain characteristics: “We all love golf and we like the camaraderie on the course. We all like to have fun and it really becomes a social activity for us.”

Crowell and Maver both moved to Linden Ponds in late 2004, just two months apart. They are both natives of Quincy, but Maver lived in North Carolina for many years until returning to New England.

“We went to school together and we knew of each other, but we really weren’t friends at the time,” Maver says. “We met again when we moved to Linden Ponds and we’ve become fast friends. We love living here because there’s always something to do.”

Especially when golf season rolls around.
