Linden Ponds opened in October of 2004 and at that time, the Dining Services Department hired seven students from various area high schools.

Now just over a year and a half later, Dining Services has hired their 100th student employee.

Students From All Over

“We have students from ten different area high schools and seven colleges working with us and we have four students who have been working with us since Linden Ponds’ opened,” said Marisa Kelley, staff development manager at Linden Ponds. “Word gets out about job opportunities here by the student employees themselves and through all the great relationships we have made with area schools.”

Linden Ponds’ 100th student employee is Elyse Giannelli, a senior at Weymouth High School. She will be working as a restaurant assistant in the kitchen.

The Linden Ponds Appeal

“I am really looking forward to all of the opportunities working at Linden Ponds will bring me,” said Giannelli. “I’m also very excited to start working here while I am in high school and I will be able to continue when I begin attending college in the fall. The flexibility Linden Ponds offers to students is very appealing.”

The students work in the Fireside restaurant and the Harbor Café where they wait on and bus tables. They could also work in the kitchen at a dessert station, in the dishwasher room and on food preparation.

Personal Growth

Many students will also have the opportunity to become service coaches. Once promoted, after they interview for the position, they will train new employees. Service coaches also attendand participate in additional trainings, act as a voice among peers to appropriately channel ideas, recommendations and/or concerns and they assist in planning social events for student staff.

The applicants must demonstrate a strong work ethic, competency in work tasks, strong leadership abilities especially among peers, they must be friendly and service oriented towards residents.

Intergenerational Connection

“Hiring the one hundredth student at Linden Ponds is about so much more than just the number,” said Kelley. “The intergenerational connection that is fostered between the student employees and the people who live here is very moving. Stories are exchanged about life choices and experiences often have a profound impact on both the students and those who live here. The students get to really know the people who live here and form lasting friendships.

The students have an amazing opportunity to grow and learn here professionally. There are many success stories throughout the company of people who started as a bus person and have worked their way up to being in a management position.”

Scholarship Fund

Students can also become eligible for The Linden Ponds Student Scholarship Program by completing 1,000 hours of work at Linden Ponds over a consecutive 2-year period. Students who are eligible receive $4,000 over four years of college. The money is dispersed directly to their school in $500-per-semester increments, for a maximum of eight semesters or four years.

“What better way for the students to learn than in a hands-on environment,” said Kelley. “They also get to interact on a daily basis with a generation much different than their own. And the relationships they form with those that live here are very strong.”
