“I was attracted to medicine and caring for the older adult population that I love so much,” says Mary Norman, M.D. “I want to be creative in helping older adults maximize their health during their retirement years.”

Starting on June 18, Norman will join William Featherston, M.D., in Highland Springs’ medical center where she will serve as medical director. Norman is board-certified in internal medicine with an added certification in geriatrics.

Norman comes from the Baylor Senior Health Network, where she has been a practicing geriatrician as well as an advisor to other doctors about the needs of older adults. She has over seven years of experience in geriatrics.

“I admire the spirit of caring here,” she says about Erickson Health ® and the medical center at Highland Springs. “Rather than just managing medical problems and prescribing medications, I have the opportunity to help people have their best quality of life because of the support of specialists, therapists, and programs at Erickson.”

Award-winning doctor
Norman received the Jeffrey Weingarten Award from her peers at the University of California, San Francisco, for “the compassionate care of patients and the practice of medicine according to the highest ethical standards.” She also received the Gold-Headed Cane Award, the highest award given to the graduating medical student who most embodies the traits of a “true physician” as determined by fellow students and attending physicians.

“That award meant a lot to me. It was inspiring to have that vote of confidence from both the physicians who were my role models and my peers at school,” Norman says.

Her patients and their families also give Norman votes of confidence. In July, Norman will be giving the first Patsy Mason Memorial Lecture at the Senior Olympics in Louisville, Ky. Patsy Mason was Norman’s much-loved patient who passed away last year.

Family time
Norman also has a rewarding family life with her husband and two boys, ages seven and ten. “My youngest son created our family motto,” she says. “The family that plays together stays together.”

She and her family won an award from a local children’s magazine for “Turn Off the TV Week.” “We chronicled our week without TV,” Norman says, “It was a fun experience—especially with ‘dad’ bringing home new games!” (Norman’s husband is vice president of sales for a board game company.)

In addition to testing new games, the family participates in sports like basketball, baseball, golf, and tennis. “Recreation keeps our bodies and minds healthy,” Norman says. “I intend to contribute many creative ideas to the fun-and-play spirit at Highland Springs.
