Like Dallas Itself, Exciting Opportunities Draw Community’s First Move-Ins From Near and Far

THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

Dallas is one of the largest cities in the state of Texas, and the ninth largest in the nation. With its world famous museums, championship sports teams, an array of top-level universities, and renowned shopping meccas such as the Galleria, the city has a little bit of something for most everyone.

In recent years, the city has been marked by rapid growth, with the Metroplex population topping six million. People who have called Dallas home for years are staying put, and those who are just realizing the benefits of Big D are getting here as fast as they can.

Here, with our friendly Texas hospitality, people are coming in search of all things American: home, health, and happiness. Likewise, fulfillment of that same dream is now drawing people to Highland Springs.

Home Sweet Home

When Highland Springs opens for residents this month, Phyllis and J.T. Dunkin will be among the first to move in.

“We wanted to stay in the area, with three of our four daughters living in the Meroplex,” says Phyllis. “And it’s funny, we both have always said we’re from Dallas, but now for the first time, we’ll actually be living in Dallas. We’ve been in McKinney, Garland, and finally we’ll have an actual Dallas address.”

The couple, who owned an urban planning and landscape architecture firm, is attracted not only by the location, but also by the amenities at Highland Springs. “We looked at other places, and there’s no comparison,” says J.T. “What sold me was that Highland Springs has it all: indoor pool, exercise room, post office, bank.”

“And another thing — the people. We went to several events for Priority List members and that just thrilled me. We are definitely looking forward to the social opportunities,” says Phyllis.

Not surprisingly, due to its desirable location on Coit Road, just south of the George Bush Turnpike, many of the new residents are moving from nearby.

“One of the attractions of moving to Highland Springs is that it’s less than 5 miles from where we are now. We’ll work with the same church, school, and hospital. Our current activities will blend in with the new things we’ll participate in at Highland Springs,” says Herb Hoxie, who with wife Helen will be among the first to settle at the community.

Likewise, Jeanne Hendricks says it was important for her and husband Howard to stay in Dallas. “Our children are in the area, and actually, we will be closer to our daughter, closer to our church, so we won’t have to drive so far. We will have lots of freedom.

“I will have more free time to write, and my husband will enjoy reading and pursuing his studies. It’s all positive.”

Home Away From Home

Not all of these pioneer residents are long-time Texans, however. Spurred by the desire to be near her daughter, and the fact that the Erickson community near her Virginia home (Greenspring) had waiting lists of several years, Joanne Whitbeck is moving to Highland Springs.

“We [Joanne and her daughter] went to visit Highland Springs. I was just looking at plans, but I knew what it was going to be like,”says Whitbeck. “And, it just so happened that the apartment that I preferred — a two-bedroom corner with a sunroom — came available that day, and since I was already on the Priority List at Greenspring, I took it!

“When we visited, it was mostly backhoes and bulldozers, but once you’ve seen an Erickson community go up and you realize the integrity with which they build and you know the well-trained staff,” Whitbeck continues. “you take it on faith that the next community will be the same. There is a peace of mind with Erickson. You just know it will all be fine.”
