With a Three- to Seven-Year Waiting List at the Erickson Community Near Her Virginia Home, This Priority List Member Finds Opportunity at Highland Springs

Joanne is a planner. She’s cautious, and approaches problems systematically. So when she began exploring her retirement living options, she left no stone unturned.

“I have many friends who moved to Greenspring [Erickson’s community in Springfield, Virginia], so I would go for lunch and visit,” Joanne says.

“Everyone was friendly and upbeat, and I could see that my friends had made a good decision,” she remembers, “but I just wasn’t ready.”

She continued her study of Greenspring and other communities in the area.

“Three years later, Greenspring just looked better and better” she continues. “They put in a chapel and a building for the performing arts. Every time I went, there was something new.”

“I went with a critical eye, looking for something not to like — but I couldn’t find anything,” Joanne recalls.

“The staff was friendly. Everything was so clean. The landscaping was lovely, and regardless of the season, there were always flowers. People were busy, pleasant, and happy to be there.

“I looked at other places, and I realized they didn’t really compare — none were up to the Erickson standards. Greenspring was head and shoulders above the rest. I thought, ‘why settle for less?’”

The Wait Begins in Virginia …

Her mind made up, Joanne got on the Priority List at Greenspring, but there was a three- to seven-year wait for the kind of apartment home she wanted.

“Erickson has built quite a reputation here,” says Joanne. “Everywhere—Maryland, Virginia—people are lining up to get in. I knew it would be a long time before I could move in.

“I had been on the Priority List for a couple of years when I saw that Erickson was building in Houston. So, I called and commented that I wished they would build one in Dallas, and happily they said they were.”

… And Ends in Texas

Still her careful self, Joanne waited, and watched the progress at Highland Springs. It was on a trip to visit her daughter in Fort Worth that she made the decision.

“We went for a visit. I was just looking at plans, but I knew what it was going to be like,” Joanne says.

“It just so happened that the apartment that I preferred—a two-bedroom corner with a sunroom—came vacant that day, and because I was already on the Priority List at Greenspring, I took it.

“It was my birthday present to myself. I reserved it on a Thursday, and on Friday, I started working with Gail Wrzesinski (Move-In Coordinator) picking out the countertops, tiles and such.”

Backhoes and Bulldozers

“When we visited, it was mostly backhoes and bulldozers, but once you’ve seen an Erickson community go up, you realize the integrity with which they build,” Joanne states confidently.

“You know the welltrained staff, and you have faith that the next community will be the same. There is a peace of mind with Erickson. You just know it will all be fine.”

While each Erickson campus shares a common blueprint for living, every community is individualized with features that are specially- designed to reflect the personality of the individuals who live there.

Building a New Life

At Highland Springs, this includes a host of amenities in the 52,000 square foot Hillcrest Clubhouse, including two restaurants, an indoor pool and spa, a Fitness Center, Medical Center, and even a 1,350- square-foot greenhouse.

The grounds will be enhanced with plantings and outdoor structures to add a unique character to the campus. The pond, with its handsome sandstone retaining walls, will be the setting for a gazebo and sidewalks that meander through the property, providing a spot  for a pleasant walk.

“I know that at Highlands Springs, I will enjoy a very secure, tuckedin kind of feeling,” says Joanne. “I feel that this is the very best move for me. I put a great deal of faith in Erickson. I know I will be taken care of.”

The Boomers Are Coming Sooner Than You Think

“More and more of my friends are choosing Erickson. Some are waiting for the new community in Denver,” Joanne says. “Others are on the list at Greenspring, or in Maryland. Everyone my age is serious about this.”

Passing the message on to family members, Joanne’s sister and brother-in-law, both in their sixties, are already beginning a similar search.

“They won’t be ready for about five years, but they’re smart to get on the list now,” says Joanne. “The baby boomers are coming along, and the waiting list at some Erickson communities is three to seven years. When all those boomers get out there, the wait will be even longer.”

“Other places fall short in at least one way or the other,” she continues. “If the possibility is out there, why not go for it?”
