THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

During the inaugural kickoff breakfast for his Beat Michigan Tailgate, former Ohio State University Head Coach Earle Bruce announced his family’s charitable commitment to The Earle & Jean Bruce Alzheimer’s Research Fund for the neurology department at OSU. There, he accepted a $50,000 donation from Hickory Chase to advance that goal.

The breakfast was held in September at the Hickory Chase welcome center. The Erickson retirement community that will open next year in Hilliard is the headline sponsor for Coach Bruce’s annual tailgate this November. All tailgate proceeds will go toward bringing a full-service Alzheimer’s research center to OSU.

Executive Director Becky Converse, who presented the check, cites Erickson’s history of philanthropic involvement. “For 25 years,” says Converse, “the mission of Erickson has been to share our gifts to create communities that celebrate life— both inside and outside our gates. Hickory Chase is strongly committed to giving back to the greater community. We are absolutely honored to work with Coach Bruce and support his efforts relating to Alzheimer’s research through an event as important—and as fun— as the Beat Michigan Tailgate.”

Coach Bruce’s father and sister both had Alzheimer’s. “We need a research center right here in Columbus,” he says, “and we’re unbeatable when we work together.” Daughter Lynn Bruce is the foundation’s executive director.

OSU’s Alzheimer’s research
Dr. Douglas Scharre, director of cognitive neurology at The Ohio State University Medical Center, has researched Alzheimer’s for more than 12 years. At the breakfast, he outlined the range of research projects underway at OSU. He’s especially hopeful about those aimed at slowing the progression of the disease. “The tailgate means so much to get needed funding for research,” he says.

The Alzheimer’s Centergrant would come from the National Institutes of Health. “It’s very competitive,” says Scharre. “Only 9% who apply get grants. You need five research proposals backed up with research before you can apply. We will use this money in the best way we can.

Hickory Chase’s commitment
Hickory Chase’s sponsorship donation is the largest in the tailgate’s three-year history, says Community Relations Director Chris Valentine. He attended school and played sports with Coach Bruce’s grandchildren and has known the NCAA Hall of Famer for years. “Coach was astounded at Hickory Chase’s willingness to join hands with him and the foundation to help this cause,”  Valentine says.

Hickory Chase’s commitment extends to two OSU events next spring that will also benefit the foundation: Head Football Coach Jim Tressel’s Spring Preview and the James E. Horne Memorial Golf Outing.

 Beat Michigan Tailgate
Earle Bruce’s Beat Michigan Tailgate will be held Fri., Nov. 21 at French Fieldhouse on the OSU campus. Part tailgate, part pep rally, the day’s events include Coach Bruce’s interviews with former players and coaches, the OSU alumni band and cheerleaders, and large-screen replays of past OSU vs. Michigan games.

OSU President Gordon Gee, Athletic Director Gene Smith, and Football Coach Jim Tressel will also be there. And Coach Bruce has invited some special guests—OSU stars from past Michigan contests.

Hickory Chase will be represented too, says Converse. “We’ll be there to enjoy the fun and to support Coach Bruce’s goal.” Fans can go online to purchase tickets to the tailgate and raffle tickets for coveted prizes: tickets to the OSU-Michigan game the next day and a trip to the OSU 2008-2009 Bowl Game.
