Opposites attract, look forward

Hickory Chase priority list members Lynne and Frank Otto seem to prove the maxim that opposites attract. She’s the quiet one, a former elementary school teacher known for her incredible patience. He’s the live wire, a retired industrial engineer intrigued by people and science, who has never met a stranger.

But the Ottos are more alike than not. They share a devotion to family and a love of travel. And her wry sense of humor matches his own. Also, “Lynne and I are both forward thinkers,” Mr. Otto says, “so we’re thinking five years down the road. I’m getting older. I cut half the grass now, then I sit down on a chair in the garage for half an hour, then I do the rest. Maybe we need to live someplace easier.”

That “someplace easier” will be Hickory Chase, the Erickson retirement  community  under construction in northwest Columbus.

Easier lifestyle
The seed for a maintenance-free lifestyle was planted ten years ago when the Ottos moved from their large house in Whitehall to one just two miles from grandchildren in Hilliard. “Shortly after we moved, Frank broke his foot,” says his wife. “Then he got gout in his other foot. He was completely bedridden, and that gave us the idea that we might need a different situation. Also, I had polio as a child.” While operations then have prevented regression now, “You never know what might happen.”

After reading about Hickory Chase and driving by its welcome center on their way to church, she sent for an information kit, an in-depth booklet about the community. “And when we learned about the 100% refundable entrance deposit,” she says, “Frank was sold on that. He doesn’t want his money to disappear.” He’s already calculated they’ll save $5,000 a year by eliminating one car.

The Ottos joined the priority list to reserve their place in line for a home at Hickory Chase. Last fall they went with other priority list members to tour an  Erickson community in Michigan. “When we saw the community I was very impressed,” Mrs. Otto says. “Erickson tries to keep you young, healthy, and active. Other places seem more institutionalized.”

Preparing to move
The couple is downsizing now—well, he is. She did hers ten years ago. “Frank has the den, half the basement—I refused to give him the whole basement—and the garage. If he lives to be 120, I think he’ll finish,” she quips. Frank admits he’s reacquired plenty of “stuff” since moving from their Whitehall house.

“I can amuse myself with anything,” he says. He carves, whittles, and makes rolled-paper models of buildings and bridges. He maintains online social networking groups about the USS Mt. Olympus, the ship he served on during  WWII and whose reunions the Ottos attend. At Hickory Chase he’ll play chess, tinker in the wood shop, and regale his tablemates at dinner.

Both he and his wife might join book groups, and they’ll definitely play bridge. In fact, they’re taking bridge lessons now to prepare. Mrs. Otto would also like to do line dancing and return to painting.

Daughter Melinda Corroto says her mom might be interested in off-campus pursuits as well. “I think Mom would like to do more traveling,” she says. When Corroto was in college, her mother took her to Europe, and they developed each day’s itinerary as they went along. “She’s adventurous, and she made me feel comfortable to be adventurous,” Corroto says. “But Mom’s main thing is to be selfless and giving so that other people can be themselves.”

The right decision
Mrs. Otto confirms that description when she says, “The best thing about our decision to move to Hickory Chase is that we made it. It’s important not to burden our three children with our care in the future.”

Her husband adds two additional and practical reasons: “Hickory Chase will cost less and will entail less work than where we live now.”
