Great Lakes Restaurant brings back brunch

If it’s been a while since you’ve had brunch, it’s been too long. I recently noshed on a brunch feast fit for royalty at Henry Ford Village, in Dearborn.

There, the Great Lakes Restaurant features dinner five nights a week, but the best-kept secret is their Sunday brunch. This is no cafeteria-style brunch— only white tablecloths, fine china, and polished silverware will do.

I tried freshly-made scrambled eggs, home-fries, bacon, and sausage patties. Everything was made hot and fresh, and there was plenty of it.

Picky? No problem. Service at the Great Lakes was superb; as soon as we were seated, our waiter took our drink orders (orange and apple juice) and brought them back immediately.

My dining companion, a notoriously picky eater and of the “under-ten” age, enjoyed her meal as much as I did.

She particularly liked the fresh fruit: a medley of cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon, pineapple, and plump juicy strawberries.

As for her home fries, “Wow, those are really good!” was her exact reaction.

Omelet creation station
Although we didn’t opt for an omelet, we were seated right next to the omelet station, where a steady line streamed constantly throughout the morning. Two experienced omelet-makers took orders and made each one right in front of eager diners. Fixings included ham, mushrooms, onions, potatoes, peppers, cheese, and tomatoes. I don’t know what was better—the sizzle or the smell.

The Sunday brunch also features black-forest ham carved to order, mashed potatoes, quiche du jour, cheese blintzes, Egg Beaters, shrimp, bagels, toast, and a full-service salad bar with jello and fruit. Yet another station features homemade Belgian waffles, made right in front of your eyes with toppings such as whipped cream, powdered sugar, and fresh fruit.

When my dining companion and I got up to get second helpings, we were surprised to find a fresh slice of orange poundcake drizzled with white icing awaiting us at our table. The cake was so moist and flavorful without being too sweet—one of the best I’ve had in a long time.

Sweet surprise
If you think special orders are out of the question, think again. I overhead someone nearby asking for a dish of vanilla ice cream— a server brought them one right away.

The only fault I could find with the Great Lakes was that the food is so good, you’re almost certain to eat too much. Though, it’s brunch—breakfast and lunch—so it’s really taking the place of two meals, right? That’s what I told myself, anyway.
