Tax time isn’t so taxing for residents

Posted on Tuesday, April 10, 2007

DEARBORN, MI – Henry Ford Village residents have many resources at their disposal to complete the often daunting task of preparing their annual income tax returns. Village residents, unlike their peers who do not live in the community, are not wasting their time stressing about the April deadline.

Throughout the month of March and up until the tax deadline, community members can make an appointment with one of three tax preparation services available at Henry Ford Village.

The AARP Tax-Aide Program is led by a volunteer community member and an AARP certified site leader. The program provides tax assistance to middle and low income tax payers age 60 years and older. According to AARP, “the volunteers are trained to complete basic income tax forms and answer tax questions.” Appointments are coordinated by Henry Ford Village’s community resources department. AARP also provides services at the Dearborn Senior Center.

H&R Block Tax Services also offers services at Henry Ford Village as a convenience to residents. A 10 percent discount is an additional benefit of the service. H&R Block provides their standard service guarantee, access to year-round service, and free electronic filing.

Dearborn Heights certified public accounting firm, Rennie & Assenmacher, P.C., offers on-site visits to Henry Ford Village residents. The company currently serves 60 members of the community and says, “You don’t have to leave your apartment home. We will come to you.”

Residents who are interested in tackling their own income tax returns, have helpful and accessible resources as well. A “tax table” is set-up each year in the lower level of the Great Lakes Clubhouse, which contains federal and state forms, instruction booklets, and informational flyers.

“We have about 35 community members that use AARP and 60 or 70 that use H&R Block,” says Sandra Wyatt, community resources coordinator at Henry Ford Village. “Both programs are well utilized on campus. The volunteers and staff are wonderful.” (Kathie Shaffer)
