Community’s ‘favorite daughter’ adopts baby

THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

On September 29, 2006, a six-month-old baby boy from Guatemala, named Daniel Estuardo Stehlik, arrived in Houston, Texas. Daniel traveled with his new adoptive parents, Linda and Joe Stehlik, to their Dearborn home — Daniel and his parents were embarking on the journey of their lives.

Linda, who serves as the Executive Assistant to Henry Ford Village’s Executive Director, Larry Vidovic, was brimming with delight.

Anticipation abounds
Last January, Linda and Joe turned in their adoption application, and in March, they flew to Guatemala to expedite the process and meet their new son. “We had no information on him, except his birth date and name at birth,” Linda says. “The anticipation and anxiety was difficult while we waited for our attorney and foster mother to bring us our little boy.” Finally, Linda was handled a miniature bundle wrapped up in a blanket — tiny Estuardo Jose weighed in at 3 lbs., 5 oz.

“My husband and I knew from that moment on that we were blessed with an angel,” she says. During their visit, the couple had made a list of new names for their new son. “My husband came up with ‘Daniel,’” she says. “He needed to have a strong name because he was so small, but a fighter.” They decided on ‘Estuardo’ for a middle name. “We wanted to keep his given name as his second name so he would always have some heritage connection,” she says.

The couple had to leave Daniel in Guatemala until the adoption was finalized. “We continued to receive pictures every month and updates on our son’s progress,” says Linda. In late September, they received a call from the adoption agency, telling them their new son would soon be coming home.

Job rewarding, too
As if a happy and fulfilling home life weren’t enough, Linda is equally content at her job at Henry Ford Village. In addition to her duties handling meetings, travel arrangements, and calendars for both the Executive Director and Associate Executive Director on campus, Linda is also extremely active with the community members. Coordinating special projects, presentations, performing notary services, and working on various community activities are just a few examples of what keeps her busy during the day.

“You become close to the community members,” Linda says. She’s a big advocate of the pay it forward philosophy, or giving out good deeds. “Sometimes the littlest things that brighten daysmake me feel good, too. There is nothing like sharing and caring for others.”

Erickson Communities has a family-friendly adoption policy which underwrites part of the cost.

Extended family at work
Linda feels strongly that the support she and her husband received during their adoption process gave them the incentive to forge on. “We not only had support from our families, but also from our extended families and friends from Henry Ford Village and Delphi (Joe’s employer),” she says. “They went through everything that we did. You could say they felt the anticipation and anxiety as we went through the process, and always had a great deal of emotional and spiritual support to help us get through the process.”

“You feel part of a big family, with lots of people who will listen and help with issues,” says Linda. “Working for a company that makes you feel good at the end of the day is a blessing in today’s world. This place is truly a home away from home.”

‘Family is complete’
Today, Daniel has two teeth and is crawling. “He has just started to pull himself up on the furniture, and walk around it,” says Linda. “Daniel is one special little boy that has brought more life and joy not only into our lives, but our families and friend’s lives, too. It is great to be parents.”

Linda continues: “To us, adopting is the most rewarding experience we have ever been through,” Linda says. “We not only have a complete family now, but we are able to give our little boy a chance at life that he may have never had.”
