Banking in a blizzard

While it snows, sleets, or rains outside, it’s business as usual

When it comes to Michigan weather, unpredictability is a certainty – especially during the winter months. We all lead busy lives, though, and need to get things done, bad weather or not. Who wants to layer themselves in long johns and flannel, head outside to ice, snow, or freezing rain, wait for the car to warm up, and then drive in the stuff in order to do their banking?

At Henry Ford Village, none of the winter gear is required for a trip to the bank – it’s conveniently located inside. The climate controlled hallways provide a warm and toasty link to destinations such as Comerica Bank – everything is just a short walk away.

“One of the first things I did when I moved to Henry Ford Village was switch to the Comerica Bank here,” says Lee Weidman, who moved from Trenton. Lee waited two years before she got the home she wanted at Henry Ford Village.

Comerica’s Branch Manager, Marilyn Peterson, hears compliments about the bank just about every day. “We always hear how convenient it is for us to be here,” says Marilyn. Nestled just a few steps away from the Great Lakes Club House’s main lobby, Comerica Bank welcomes customers three days per week. “We are a full service bank,” says Marilyn. “We also have an ATM in the lobby, which is available 24/7.”

Snow and ice usually mean postponing errands
An article written by Emily Smith of the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center points out that during the winter, many older adults have a difficult time getting out to get the basics done; what’s more, when they do, they are much more prone to slips and falls on the ice.

“Staying safe on snow and ice is a challenge for drivers and pedestrians. However, pedestrians are particularly vulnerable when walking near vehicles on slippery surfaces.”

“Snow and ice cause a substantial number of falls for pedestrians living in colder climates,” says Dr. Jane Stutts, manager of epidemiological studies at the research center.

“You get seniors who are trapped in their homes and apartments,”says Bill Wilkinson, director of the Pedestrian Federation of America in Washington D.C. “They simply can’t go anyplace for weeks at a time and have to depend on family and friends to do grocery shopping and things like that.”

Bill continues. “I sometimes think about some of these seniors in urban apartment buildings who are living alone, and I wonder how they get their necessities.”

With Comerica Bank (and a convenience market) centrally located and weather- friendly, community members at Henry Ford Village needn’t worry about having to put off their banking transactions or shopping — what could be easier?

Convenience appeals to customers
“I just have to walk down the hall from my home to get to the bank here,” says Lee. “It doesn’t even take me five minutes.” Before she moved to Henry Ford Village, a trip to the bank for Lee meant getting in the car and driving there. Now, those days are over. “Comerica is a very well-respected and wellknown bank,” says Lee. “I think having a bank here is one of the best things the community has to offer.”

Marilyn has been working at the branch for four years. “We provide good customer service,” she says. “We get to know our customers very well. We like being here.”

“The girls at the bank are just like part of the family,” says Lee. “It’s the best banking experience I’ve ever had.

“I didn’t expect a bank to be right here,” she says. “It was a pleasant surprise. I just love it.”
