“People here wouldn’t believe it, but [my husband], Don, used to be a real quiet guy—reading and writing, taking it easy in retirement. Since we’ve moved to Greenspring, he’s become Mr. Personality. He greets everyone, and he’s joined several groups,” says Kathleen Henry on why moving to Greenspring was one of the “smartest decisions [they’ve] ever made.”
The Henrys’ busy lifestyle is enough to make anyone stop and take a breath, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. Mr. Henry spends his time attending Aero Club meetings, bowling with the Greenspring league, participating in billiards tournaments, and serving on the library committee.
As a library committee member, he catalogs books into the computer, and provides the “muscle” for getting books ready for the book sales.
Mrs. Henry works with the county registrar to get newcomers ready to vote, a task she admits has kept her very busy in the last few months and one she expects to continue until Election Day.
She also teaches an English as a Second Language class for Greenspring’s housekeeping staff, belongs to Katy-Dids (a social group comprised of Catherines, Kathleens, Kays, and Katherines), teaches at Greenspring’s summer camp for kids, and belongs to the Greenspring unit of the League of Women Voters.
Off campus, Mrs. Henry works part-time for Fairfax County Adult Education as a GED test administrator, while Mr. Henry writes and distributes a newsletter for his old Navy unit, VC-61.
Over the last five years, the Henrys have helped other people learn more about Greenspring. “We have had our apartment on display more times than we can count,” says Mrs. Henry. “We love sharing our home with people who may one day be our neighbors.”
