THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE
Redskins Park, a mecca for football fans throughout the Washington, D.C., area, occupies a prime piece of real estate just a short walk from Ashby Ponds’ lush, 132-acre campus.
Every year in late July and early August, visitors enjoy the rare opportunity to see their favorite Washington Redskins players in person.
Fun for free
During the summer football training camp season (late July to early August), Redskins Park opens its doors—free of charge—to local football fans. And while parking is also free, those living at Ashby Ponds can choose between driving and taking a leisurely walk down the street to the park.
Whether visiting alone or with friends and family, there is something for everyone during training camp. In one afternoon guests can see Coach Gibbs yell out plays to his team while superstars, including Santana Moss and Clinton Portis, practice their expert maneuvers.
Each practice lasts between 90 minutes and two hours. Guests are welcome to take photographs of their favorite players. And be sure to bring a pen. Although not guaranteed, many players sign autographs after practice.
Perfect day for a picnic
The park allows coolers with food and nonalcoholic beverages, and there’s plenty of room to spread out a picnic blanket or set up folding chairs.
Vendors along the perimeter of the field sell hot dogs, pizza, funnel cakes, sodas, and water.
Join the fun
Open to anyone ready to enjoy a day of professional football in a relaxed, welcoming setting, Redskins Park provides the perfect summer pastime. And for those living at Ashby Ponds, it will be just one of many opportunities available within minutes of campus.
So, next year, pack your cooler, grab some friends, and head to Redskins Park.
