This fall, 13 students begin their pursuit of a college education with the help of the Greenspring Scholars Fund.

Created to support student staff members as they continue their formal postsecondary education, recipients receive up to $4,000 for college, trade, or vocational certificate programs.

Spirit of generosity
A tangible expression of the bond that forms between Greenspring’s student employees and the residents who they serve daily, the Scholars Fund embodies the community’s commitment to the greater community.

Hoping to reward exemplary students while easing the financial burden associated with the pursuit of higher education, the Greenspring community has raised $102,000 and awarded 68 scholarships in the last eight years.

This year’s voluntary contributions include both those the residents make and those from various residentrun clubs like the Treasure Chest, wood shop, and Knit and Crochet Club. These contributions represent a 28% increase over last year’s donations.

Dedicated workers
As young members of the Greenspring staff, all of the scholarship winners demonstrate a strong personal commitment to serve the Greenspring community in a responsible, professional, and caring way. Each met a grade requirement and interviewed with the Philanthropy Committee and Greenspring’s TV Channel 6.

“These students go beyond customer service, actually developing intergenerational relationships with the Greenspring community,” says Greenspring Philanthropy Manager Kim Kelley. “As the residents—many of whom were educators— watch the students mature both personally and professionally, they become vested in their futures. Supporting the scholars with their voluntary contributions is a way for Greenspring community members to exercise their philanthropic spirit in a way that is personally meaningful.”
