According to the findings of Robert J. Nied, M.D., and Barry Franklin, Ph.D., published in American Family Physician, “Regular exercise provides a myriad of health benefits in older adults, including improvements in blood pressure, diabetes, lipid profile, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and neurocognitive function. Regular physical activity is also associated with decreased mortality and age-related morbidity in older adults.”
Unfortunately, the study also finds that “up to 75% of older Americans are insufficiently active to achieve the health benefits associated with physical exercise.”
Working to improve those statistics, Greenspring’s Wellness Manager Brad Hibbs and his team of 14 wellness experts strive every day to improve the overall health and physical wellbeing of the Greenspring community. “It is typical for the Fitness Center to log over 2,473 visits in a single month,” says Brad.
Topnotch resources
Equipped with a variety of exercise equipment including Keiser resistance machines, Nu Steps, treadmills, and recumbent bikes, the Fitness Centers offer a full range of state-of-the-art equipment designed to meet the needs of everyone, regardless of fitness level.
Located within minutes of your front door, the Fitness Center is a luxury most people did not have before making the move to Greenspring. “This convenience makes it extremely difficult to devise excuses for not taking the time to workout,” says former aerobics instructor Mary McDonnell.
Like many people on campus, Mary admits that “exercise is a high priority and the Fitness Center provides a convenient opportunity to stay in shape.” In addition to her daily 2 mile walk, Mary takes full advantage of all that the Fitness Center offers including the aerobic and strength training machines.
