The dish on Signatures Restaurant in Novi

Hidden gem nestled in retirement community

THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

Many people probably assume the food offered in retirement communities is bland and nondescript. A visit to the Signatures Restaurant located in Fox Run, a retirement community in Novi, may prove them wrong.

Admirable ambiance
I recently dined there with a very finicky guest (my nine-year-old daughter, Sabrina). As soon as we arrived, I was immediately struck by the crisp, cozy décor and muted-light ambience. Tables are positioned throughout the restaurant so there is plenty of room to move around— there’s nothing crowded about this place.

Earthy tones such as green, peach, and beige dot Signatures’ landscape, from the comfy chairs to the quaint brown parchment-type lamps that grace each table.

The pièce de résistance in Signatures has to be its centerpiece, an open-area cooking station accompanied by a crescent-shaped marble countertop and hanging lights all around.

“It’s an extra kitchen, or a ‘baker’s kitchen,’” our waiter, Alex, tells us. “That’s where chefs prepare special desserts like fruit crisps.”

The baker’s kitchen was truly a sight to see, and I’d never seen anything like it before. It was upscale yet quite welcoming.

Freshness rules
Alex immediately brought us a basket of hot, homemade rolls, including wheat, white, and poppy seed.

The menu was impressive. The soup du jour, which we both ordered, was roasted vegetable and wild rice with a rich chicken broth, squash, and potatoes. It was superb.

Next, Sabrina and I enjoyed the “Signature Salad,” comprised of fresh garden greens topped with carrots, fresh cucumbers, grape tomatoes, and crispy croutons— full of springtime freshness.

The entrées included three choices: cider-poached pork loin with maple mustard, chicken breast with artichokes and mushrooms, or fish and chips. We both opted for the chicken breast with a vegetable medley and roasted redskin potatoes for sides (other side choices included spinach and mushrooms and baked sweet potato).

The chicken was tender and moist, and the potatoes and vegetables were bursting with flavor.

Throughout the meal, Alex was very attentive to our needs, refilling our drinks when empty, clearing plates, and taking care of all our special requests.

Dessert decisions
The night we chose to dine at Signatures was a specially themed night. To celebrate people’s birthdays, Signatures holds a “Birthday Night” once a month and is decorated with birthday balloons. Of course, one popular dessert choice on that night is a mammoth chocolate and vanilla birthday cake. Other dessert choices included French silk pie, fruit crisps (blueberry, apple, and peach) with vanilla ice cream, and a “smart sweet” diabetic-friendly strawberry mousse.

We both decided to try the cake and the peach crisp. I was especially looking forward to tasting the crisp, which was made in the baker’s kitchen, practically right before our eyes. Sure enough, the crisp arrived fast and bubbling hot with a scrumptious oatmeal crumb topping on a mountain of peaches, all topped with a creamy, premium vanilla ice cream. The yellow birthday cake was moist and sweet—a perfect ending to any meal, birthday or not.

After dinner, I asked Sabrina what she thought of the meal.

“Deeee-licious,” she says. “This is the best place I’ve ever been!”

I was surprised that a restaurant located in the heart of a retirement community would evoke such a positive reaction from such a picky eater. I had to agree with her though—Signatures won us both over.
