THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE
It’s a weekday morning and resident Gloria Whan is just finishing up her water aerobics class in Fox Run’s aquatics center. Whan also regularly uses the fitness center, where all equipment is specially designed for older adults.
“For my own health, I am involved in the fitness center,” says Whan, who moved to Fox Run from Bloomfield Hills. “Three times a week I go into the aerobics pool class, because I love water. That’s probably my favorite. I also do the jazzercise class.”
Whan is not alone in her exercise endeavors. More people than ever are hitting the gym or the pool to improve overall health rather than to specifically lose weight or gain muscle mass.

Resident Barbara Birmingham, who moved from Livonia with her husband Roy, also takes advantage of Fox Run’s all-season, indoor swimming pool.
“This morning, I went down to the pool at 9 a.m., where I water-walked. At 9:30 a.m., my water aerobics class began, and we worked for 45 minutes in the pool. I enjoy doing it—it’s good exercise for me,” Birmingham says.
Some people participate in the class as a form of physical therapy to loosen joints and strengthen muscles. Birmingham says she often hears people say, “It makes me feel good. I miss it when I don’t come.”

Tony Logan, wellness coordinator, keeps the fitness center running smoothly.
“Not only are the resources at the center made readily accessible, but there are numerous classes that residents can participate in as well as personal training at a rate that is 10%–15% of the average rate for Michigan trainers,” Logan says.
Logan stresses the importance of staying healthy and active, regardless of age.
