Nineteen student employees awarded scholarships

NOVI, MI – Fox Run is home to almost 700 residents who are served their evening meal each night by area high school students. The student staff, which totals almost 150, gains valuable experience while earning a good wage with flexible hours that are considerate of their school activities, and many develop life-long friendships with their favorite residents.

In addition, the student dining staff at Fox Run is offered an incentive for their dedicated service. Qualifying students are eligible for an up to $4,000 scholarship to the accredited educational facility of their choice. The scholarship is given in increments of $1,000 per year and continues for four years of undergraduate studies as long as the student remains in good academic standing.

“The students gain so much more than how to wait on tables or seat diners,” says Lola Johnson, staff development manager. “They learn the rewards of being committed to something and doing a great job along with the value of the wisdom our residents share with them.”

This year, 19 area students will receive scholarships from Fox Run, which will total $76,000. Fundraising efforts are cumulative and each year additional monies are used to endow the scholarship fund.

“Fox Run is not quite four years old,” comments Mike McCormick, executive director. “As the campus continues to grow, we will be awarding many more scholarships over the coming years. Our residents know the value of a good education and contribute to the fund as a result of their strong relationship with the students and their support of education,” adds McCormick.

To qualify, students must work at least 1,000 hours, typically during their last two years of high school and meet other eligibility criteria. Students serve as hosts and hostesses as well as servers and kitchen support in the campus’s Fireside Restaurant and Hunt Club Cafe. Each night approximately 500 residents share in gourmet meals created by the renowned dining staff lead by Executive Chef Dan Aubrele. It takes a strong commitment from the students to achieve the scholarship, but the reward certainly outweighs the effort.

“Our student servers are an integral part of our daily operation at Fox Run and this year’s scholars are a fantastic group of leaders,” says Kevin Cunningham, Fox Run’s director of dining. “I am so proud of the contributions these students have made to Fox Run. Hopefully, they will go to school, complete their degrees, and come right back to Fox Run to begin their professional careers. I congratulate them on a job well done.”

The scholarships were presented at a ceremony on Sunday, April 22 at 4 p.m. in the Fireside Restaurant. The program began with a welcome by Mike McCormick and the singing of the national anthem by student server Katie Larson. Current Fox Run scholars who are attending area colleges, Raquel Kassab and Tara Zantello, shared their thoughts about how receiving the scholarship from Fox Run has assisted them in furthering their education. Fox Run resident and former educator in the metropolitan Detroit area, Bill Moran, chairperson of the community’s Resident Advisory Council, spoke to the scholars, their guests, and residents, focusing on the importance of advanced education. Fox Run residents Chester Tarczynski and Mary Shih were joined by Director of Philanthropy Diana Neering for the announcement of the scholars. The program closed with a thank you from all the scholars by 2007 recipient Marie Bowles. (Kathie Shaffer)
