How would you decorate a second bedroom? |

Designing expert Jane Dagmi, editor at Country Living magazine, believes “great design exists for all budgets, whether that means acquiring a fine American antique or relishing the newest fashion trend at Target.”
When asked about the best way to add color to a room on a budget, Jane recommends starting with white, then: “Choose a color family, such as a variety of blues, or select one or two colors to dominate. I love large, color-drenched silk lamp shades, or a big bold bowl on a simple coffee table. I’d also add some great pillows and a throw that both looks and feels good.”
If you live at Fox Run, have a second bedroom, and would like to give it a ‘makeover,’ you’ll have lots of help. Experienced Custom Interiors Coordinators Barb Cooper and Deanna Dau are always ready to help you decorate to your heart’s content.
“We offer a closet organization system that is very popular,” says Barb. “When meeting with the community member, we first try to assess how they intend to use the space and what their needs will be. Are they looking for an office area, TV room, or some extra sleeping space?”
Barb says, “Community members at Fox Run definitely express their own tastes and personalities in their decorating. We have taken a beautiful old sofa that was not being used because it was not functional, and had it reworked to now become a favorite piece that will continue to be handed down.” | |

Room for family and friends Anne Susick, who moved from White Lake with her husband, Bob, has four sons that live out of town. “Three of them live out of state,” says Anne. “One lives in Florida, one in North Carolina, and one in Kansas.” As a result, moving to a home with a second bedroom was important to the couple. Barb and Deanna helped Anne decorate. Deanna showed Anne many different window treatment styles, one of which she ended up choosing. Her spare room is stocked with all new furniture, including a fourposter bed, dresser with mirror, and a chest of drawers. She’s almost done: “I want to change the paint,” says Anne.
Color schemes add personal touches Gloria Whan, who moved from Bloomfield Hills, put a lot of time and thought into decorating her second bedroom at Fox Run. “I was able to fit in furniture that I already had,” says Gloria.
Gloria describes the room as “multi-purpose.” She had a Jennifer sofa custommade to match the colors she chose for her spare room. She used yellow, soft green, white, and burgundy red. “I already had the yellow and white furniture,” says Gloria.
Lots of options to consider Gloria also has some charming traditional pieces in the room, including an antique walnut kneehole desk; two matching lamps which feature Amish farmhands, and a collection of ornamental architectural family etchings. “I’m in and out of here a lot,” says Gloria. “Everybody calls it ‘cozy.’”
No second bedroom? No problem Barb helps community members with their decorating decisions by showing them samples of things such as draperies and bedding, window treatments, flooring, carpeting, and paint. “We will shop for furniture and do furniture layouts for people,” says Barb. “We do inhome consulting before they move in to help with downsizing. We have completely redone kitchens or just added matching cabinetry to their existing kitchens.”
If a community member doesn’t have a second bedroom, or wants to enjoy their privacy – or their guests’ privacy — and would like to have people over, Fox Run has it covered. “We have four guest suites,” says Barb. Each fully furnished and decorated guest suite has one bedroom, as well as a pull-out sofa for additional family or friends.
“There are easy chairs, a desk, and a TV in the living room,” says Barb. “We were able to incorporate a small dining table as well.” There is a fee for the guest suites. “They are used all the time,” says Barb. “I really enjoy helping to make community members happy in their new homes,” says Barb.
