Amazing Aging week is underway, with a focus on brain health

Posted on Tuesday, January 23, 2007

NOVI, MI – Fox Run is celebrating “Amazing Aging” this week. A series of events that kicked off yesterday and will run through Friday are designed to promote the essence of a healthy mind to successful aging through a variety of creative activities. The week is being offered by the Fox Run “Champions,” a group of staff as well as residents who meet regularly to plan events, activities, and programs that support the “person to person” philosophy that is critical to the mission at Fox Run.

“At Fox Run, we believe that an active brain is essential to total wellness,” says Director of Resident Life Barb Jablonski. “Therefore, we are always providing opportunities for our residents to continue learning and engaging in mind stimulating activities.”

Yesterday, Dr. Peter Lichtenberg, department head of gerontology at Wayne State University, spoke to residents regarding the importance of brain health.

Tomorrow, Jean Barnas from the Alzheimer’s Association will talk to residents about the “Maintain Your Brain” program, and another representative from the Alzheimer Association, Kelly Fulkerson, will speak on Thursday about the positive effects of nutrition on brain health.

Two worthwhile presentations will be offered on Friday. The first will be a program given by Fox Run’s Wellness Coordinator Tony Logan, who will discuss cardiovascular health and how it affects the brain. Logan will be joined by one of his Fox Run colleagues, Alice Hixon, who will give evidence of the positive effects of yoga on the brain as well as the body. Also on Friday, Fox Run Campus Safety Officer Michelle Cassabon will teach an informative class on “How-To Suduko,” the hottest new math game around.

Throughout the week-long celebration there will also be giant crossword puzzles displayed on the walls of the hallways for residents and staff to try to complete; trivia cards on the tables in the dining room to inspire active discussions during dinner; and other thought-provoking, mind-stimulating activities to improve brain health.
