People at Fox Run Are Out and About

A week doesn’t go by at Fox Run when there’s not something stimulating and worthwhile for people to do away from campus.

Whether it’s sharing their knowledge with disadvantaged kids in the inner city, or heading off to one of several local casinos to try their luck with the slot machines, people at Fox Run always find a good reason to get out and about for the day.

In fact, sometimes there are just too many things to do, and not enough hours in the day.

“Right now, there are over a dozen off-campus events on the calendar through the end of next month, and people are lining up to participate,” says Andrea Peragine, Fox Run’s community resource manager.

People at Fox Run love to contribute to the community, as well as participate in its numerous cultural, and entertainment opportunities available.

Giving Back to the Community

Since last September, five community members head out each week to the City Mission School, in the Brightmoor District of Detroit, to tutor elementary school children in math and English. The students in the school are from broken or disadvantaged homes, and benefit greatly from the knowledge and experiences of the volunteers from Fox Run, all of whom were educators in the past.

Bill Moran, who spent his career as a teacher, and principal in Catholic schools in the area, has been involved from the start. “Our mission, and that of the school, is to change the pattern of dependence of these youngsters who come from this economically depressed area,” says Bill.

“Recently, they came to Fox Run for lunch, and that was a special time, not only for them, but for us. As the kids left, two people at Fox Run asked to join our committee,” he adds.

Exposure to the Arts, and Continuous Learning

One of the community’s cultural cornerstones, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, receives tremendous support from people living at Fox Run.

Composed of almost 100 people who attend each of the orchestra’s pop and classical performances from early October through the spring, the Fine Arts Group is formed and run by the people on campus.

People living at Fox Run also want to stay current with the world around them. Many attend the “Adult Learning Institute” (ALI) at Oakland Community College. Authorities speak on subjects such as world peace, religion, and art.

Gertrude Pinckney,  who moved from Farmington Hills, attends these programs. “These are conducted by leaders in their fields, and are extremely stimulating. When ALI is in session, we go three days a week. I wouldn’t think of missing one,” she says.

Leaving Campus Just for Fun

Then there are times when people head out from Fox Run simply to have fun.

For example, a group of about 40 people take monthly trips to one of the area’s gambling casinos. They go to casinos in Windsor, Ontario and downtown Detroit, and even to Mt. Pleasant, about three hours away. And there is a lot of interest in a daytrip to the casino in Sarnia, Ontario being planned for this summer.

“A busload of us goes once a month to a casino in downtown Detroit. Some play the table games, but all I know are the slots.

“I have a great time playing the penny or twopenny machines, and I usually hold my own. Some break for lunch, while others head for the bar. I won’t  tell you which group I’m in,” says Mary Clelland, who moved to Fox Run from Westland.

A large group made the trip to Frankenmuth, a favorite destination target, to tour its famous Veterans Museum. Always popular with Fox Run is “Stars on Ice,” at the Joe Lewis Arena in downtown Detroit this month. Throughout the year, community members take advantage of the many wonderful opportunities available here.

Investigate for Yourself

After shedding the weighty responsibility of owning and maintaining a house, people living at Fox Run take full advantage of all that’s available to them both on and off campus.
