“I hadn’t exactly planned on adopting a cat,” says Joyce Jackson, recounting her story to the Resident Pet Owner Association at Eagle’s Trace.

“My husband and I lived in west Houston before we moved to Eagle’s Trace,” she says. “One day, a young, scrawny cat showed up on our doorstep. At first, I just gave him a little water. He must have appreciated the kindness because he stuck around. A few days later, I put a box on my porch and gave him a little food. When the weather cooled, I opened the garage door just a bit so he would have a place to warm up. Finally, I ended up putting a basket on the dryer with a heating pad in it so he would be cozy on cold days. Sam has been with us ever since.”

Sam moved to Eagle’s Trace with the Jacksons in September 2006. Now he spends his days basking in the sun by their bay window and relishing the attention he gets from his owners. And Sam is not the only pet at Eagle’s Trace with a rags-to-riches story.

Prescription for healthy living
“Several residents have  adopted rescue animals,”says Renate Donovan. “I got my schnauzer, Ronnie, from Special Pals, a nonprofit animal adoption center in Houston.”

Donovan is president of the Resident Pet Owner Association at Eagle’s Trace. The group meets once a quarter to share ideas and discuss topics of interest. At a recent meeting, the members agreed to look into the possibility of establishing a pet-sitting co-op. The coop would allow residents to exchange pet-sitting duties when they go on vacation so they don’t have to board their animals.

“Having a pet allows you to meet people you might not otherwise get to know,” says Donovan. “I’ve made friends with other residents because we see each other out walking our dogs and realize we have that in common.”

Donovan is not alone in touting the benefits of pet ownership. According to a study published in the  Journal of Clinical Nursing, older adults who are pet owners can be significantly healthier than their pet-less counterparts. The study is part of a growing body of research that suggests pet owners have lower blood pressure and stress levels, get more exercise, and have better psychological well-being than people without pets.

“There are many benefits to having a pet: companionship, physical exercise, a conduit for social interaction—that last point is particularly important in the case of older adults,” says Bonnie Beaver, professor of veterinary medicine at Texas A&M University. “There are a number of studies indicating that strangers are more likely to engage in conversation with pet owners who are out with their animals than non-pet owners.”

Pets welcome
Eagle’s Trace is one of the few retirement communities in Houston to allow pets on campus.

“When I was looking at retirement communities, it was very important that Ronnie could come with me,” says Donovan.

With more than 70 acres of land, walking trails, and a lake on-site, Eagle’s Trace has plenty of  space for four-legged friends to explore. And two of the finest dog parks in Houston are minutes away.

Congressman Bill Archer Bark Park is located just up Highway 6 across from Bear Creek Park. The largest dog park in the city, it offers more than 20 acres of doggie swimming ponds, water fountains, doggie showers, and walking trails. There are also separate play areas for large and small dogs with corresponding agility equipment in each zone.

The Millie Bush Bark Park, named for the springer spaniel of Barbara and George H. W. Bush, is located just across Highway 6 in the George Bush Park. It offers the same amenities as the Bill Archer Bark Park and covers 13 acres.

With so many playgrounds and animal lovers nearby, for pets like Sam and Ronnie, Eagle’s Trace is a great place to call home.
