Texas retirement options

With so many, doing your research now pays dividends for life

According to a study by the American City Business Journals, today’s retirees are thinking beyond traditional hot spots like Florida and putting higher emphasis on maintaining personal connections, like family, friends, and community.

With a greater percentage of Texans of retirement age than ever before, the variety of housing for those seeking retirement lifestyle options has grown exponentially. As those options have increased, so have the chances of making a decision one might regret. There are significant differences in the amenities, services, and financial structure of every retirement living option.

What do you want to do?
Before thinking about the options available in a new home, consider what is important to you. The freedom to travel without finding someone to look after the house, plants, and pets may be appealing. Perhaps finding people who share similar interests and hobbies would be important. Primary concerns may revolve around personal safety or access to a variety of healthy opportunities and medical services.

A full-service community like Eagle’s Trace in Houston combines spacious maintenance-free apartment homes with an outstanding selection of on-site, worldclass amenities that appeal to many retirees like Jim and Pat McKinley, who moved to Eagle’s Trace from the Memorial area.

“We didn’t want to think about the upkeep of a house or worrying about the yard,” they say. “The thing we enjoy most is the freedom we have here. We have all the advantages of home ownership without any of the disadvantages. Everything here is taken care of for us.”

People who live at Eagle’s Trace don’t have to give up their ties to their current neighborhood. They stay as involved with local organizations and friends as they want to be—while making new ones—a huge benefit.

“Although we’ve made a lot of new friends here, it’s nice being close to where we used to live,” says Betty Roberts, who lives at Eagle’s Trace with her husband Claude. “In fact, we still belong to the same church and shop there.”

Ask yourself, ‘What if ...?’
Most condominiums don’t feature any health resources on site. Some retirement communities feature a visiting doctor a few times a week, which could be a hassle when you’re feeling under the weather or need to arrange for simple blood tests.

Eagle’s Trace’s integrated health care system, Erickson Health ®, provides an advantage most communities don’t have: full-time physicians and medical professionals on site. And Erickson Health physicians use Centricity, an advanced electronic medical records system—a life-saving technology that is still not available in most doctors’ offices.

The range of financial programs is as varied as the communities themselves. Straight rental properties offer a somewhat lower cost per month, but tend to offer fewer services and amenities, and no nest egg to fall back on once resources are exhausted. Other communities, like Eagle’s Trace, combine an entrance deposit with a fixed monthly service package.

But within this broad category, the details can be deceivingly different. Most only return a percentage of the entrance deposit and many include costs in the monthly service package not wanted or needed. At Eagle’s Trace, the entrance deposit is 100% refundable* to your or your heirs, and the monthly service package is kept to a minimum since Eagle’s Trace’s prices don’t include unnecessary costs or services.

According to the McKinleys, moving to Eagle’s Trace was one of the best financial decisions they’ve made: “We find that we have more money left at the end of the month than we had when we were living in our house. And we have peace of mind and such a sense of security living here.”

Now’s the time to do your research. Gather information from all of your possible options, spend time visiting them, and decide what you do and don’t like about each option.

Dare to compare
Taking time to read and organize the information you receive and asking questions of representatives from each place will prepare you to make the decision that’s best for you.

Hundreds of Texans have already shopped their options. Many, who have already moved to Eagle’s Trace, found that this community offers a life beyond comparison.
