THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE
Under the guidance of Claudia Alcocer and Shirley Woods, personal trainers in the Eagle’s Trace Fitness Center, residents are working hard to get ready for the Senior Olympics games that will be held Thursday, March 22 through Wednesday, April 11.
“We’re putting together a number of teams this year,” says Woods. “We are working on a swim team. One of our residents was a swim coach at a major university and he’s our captain.
“We have a golf team; the walking club is going to be a big part of it. And, we have some really good card players who are going to participate.”
The multi-sports event provides an opportunity for 50+ adults to compete in about 20 different sports, ranging from team sports such as golf and horseshoes, to swimming and tennis.
Shuffleboard, Texas Hold ’Em, and Washers are new categories for 2007. Eagle’s Trace is sponsoring the golf competition this year, which will be held at the Bear Creek Golf World.
The Eagle’s Trace ping-pong champion
Last year, Tom Stephens of Eagle’s Trace was one of the participants in the citywide competition, taking second place in tennis and third place in ping pong.
“I hadn’t played tennis in about two and a half years, but I thought it would be a good way to meet more players,” says Stephens, who is also president of the Resident Advisory Committee (RAC).
As for his ping pong ability, Stephens, who went on to win third place in the state competition in Austin, says he had never before competed in a tournament, and didn’t even know the rules.
