Retirement should be less taxing

The no-hassle lifestyle at Eagle’s Trace makes sense – and saves dollars – for hundreds of residents

Imagine retirement without all the stress associated with owning a house.

A world free from annual property tax bills. Where you cook only when you want to. No roofs to worry about or washer-dryers to replace. No lawns to mow or flower beds to weed.

No more time wasted waiting for the repairperson. No worries about climbing stairs or tripping on cracked sidewalks. No need to check and double-check the locks on the doors and windows. And no more stress over finding someone you can trust to look after things when you travel.

Paints a pretty nice picture, doesn’t it?

Eagle’s Trace is much more than just a pretty picture. It’s a less-taxing way of life that frees you from the hassles and expenses of traditional home ownership.

No more property taxes
Gerry Willis, writing for Money magazine, says that “skyrocketing home values and sticky-fingered politicians combined to push property tax collections up 35% from 2002 to 2006, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.”

It’s a jump, she continues, that is double the rate of personal income growth, a fact which is even more distressing for retirees on fixed incomes.

But people who live at Eagle’s Trace don’t stress over writing big checks for annual property taxes or rising utility costs. One consistently affordable monthly fee covers just about everything but the phone bill.

A less taxing lifestyle, too
When it comes to everyday services and conveniences, the 55,000-square-foot Audubon Clubhouse gives residents quick-and-easy access to most every necessity, as well as a variety of luxuries.

Bill Williams, who has lived at Eagle’s Trace since October of 2005, says he’s very happy with the set-up.

“I enjoy having the restaurants here and having the bank on site. Plus, with the doctor just down the hall, it’s very convenient,” says Mr. Williams, former vice chairman for KPMG. “The fact that I can lock the door, take off and not worry about anything – it’s quite a relief.”

“One big plus is the Medical Center,” says Ann Foster, who moved to Eagle’s Trace in December 2005. “I changed my primary physician to Dr. Patel, because she’s right here. It’s just great. This year, when it came time for flu shots, all I had to do was go downstairs.”

A more engaging life
“There are activities for everyone. I enjoy the exercise classes, and there are stretch classes, yoga, Pilates – all types of activities,” says Williams. “There’s a whole activity scenario, and you can do what you want to do. I even decided to try line dancing.”

“Life here is definitely less taxing. The restaurants are here, the bank, the Fitness Center and pool; you don’t have to get out very often if you don’t want to,” says Foster. “In the beginning, I went to dinner by myself and the hostess would seat me with different people so I’ve made wonderful new friends. That’s one of the greatest things – the friendships I’ve developed.”

C’mon, get happy
In your heart, you know that retirement shouldn’t be spent worrying about taxes, home maintenance and lengthy trips to the doctor. Life should be fun, and you should be surrounded by people you enjoy each and every day, not just during the holidays.
