With the winter holidays less than a month away, time for shopping is getting scarce. Whether you want to go out or shop at home, here are some simple, localized ideas that take little time but are sure to please even the pickiest person.

The gift of adventure
Give your grandchildren a gift they will remember for a lifetime. Send them to NorthBay, a premier summer camp within an hour’s drive of Oak Crest and less than two hours from Charlestown. Just for the holidays, the camp is offering a 20% discount to anyone who registers before January 1, 2008.

Located at the tip of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay on 100 acres of wooded waterfront property, NorthBay provides kids ages 7 to 16 with programs of adventure and discovery in an exciting outdoor environment.

Your grandchild can choose from one to two week programs in climbing,  sailing,  mountain biking, extreme science, filmmaking, and more. Programs new this year include archery, waterskiing, dance and drama, and land sports.

Carol Hughes, who lives at Charlestown, sent her granddaughter to NorthBay last year. Her granddaughter says she can’t wait to go back this summer. “It was a great learning experience for her, and she really enjoyed the camaraderie with the other kids. She did the rock climbing and participated in some of the water activities,” Hughes says.

Summer programs run from June 29 to August 9, 2008. For more information, call the camp at 1-866-527-3060 or visit their website, www.NorthBaySummer.com.

Where to shop
Great shopping surrounds both Charlestown and Oak Crest.White Marsh Mall is located just five minutes from Oak Crest, and Towson Town Center is just ten more minutes around the beltway. Towson also has several cute shops where you can find unique gifts.

Catonsville, nicknamed “Music City, Maryland,” is host to a handful of music stores. There, you’ll find everything from guitars to guitar lessons for your musically inclined grandchild, or for an adult who wants to learn a new hobby.

The Inner Harbor, in Baltimore, just added a handful of new stores to its already diverse shopping district. You’ll find everything from brand name clothing stores to specialty shops that carry Chesapeake Bay blue crab paraphernalia.

As local as it gets
Finally, you can’t get any more local than your back yard. Both Oak Crest and Charlestown have convenience stores on campus. They carry gifts as well as groceries.

“Last year I bought two little dishes for my two greatgrandchildren,” says Dorothy Jones outside the Whistle Stop, one of Charlestown’s two convenience stores.

“I appreciate these stores; they’re such a plus to living here. They make shopping so much more convenient. When I need something I don’t have to panic because I know I can just go to the store here,” she says.

Store clerk Margarett Laws says they now carry the newest craze in kid’s toys, Webkinz. Stores at both campuses also carry items like greeting cards, candles, jewelry, figurines, dolls, stuffed animals, ornaments, fleece blankets, and Russell Stover’s chocolates.
