With the winter holiday season approaching, food is on everyone’s mind. And  that means more than traditional dinners of roast turkey, savory stuffing, and cranberry sauce. It means holiday parties and family traditions, and this time of year the catering departments at Charlestown and Oakcrest kick their efforts into high gear.

Catered holiday parties
“People who live here have holiday parties all throughout the season. We cater anything from cocktail parties to brunch to plated dinners to buffets,” says Michelle Nowak, Charlestown’s catering manager. “We accommodate our clients.  They can choose a menu or create one, and they can have an event in a catering room, the conference room, their apartment, anywhere. Basically, if they can dream it, we can do it.”

Oak Crest Catering Manager Michelle Mooney says their private dining rooms book up to a year in advance for the holidays. “The residents plan on their families visiting each year so they book early to ensure they get a private dining room like the Garden Room, which is our most popular catering space,” she says.

For the past five years, Alice Wareheim has reserved the City Lights catering  room at Charlestown for her traditional family Christmas party. She has a buffet-style meal because, she says, that works best with the children. “My family looks forward to it every year. They really enjoy the chicken wings and crab dip as appetizers, and it’s a lovely place to have a party,” she says.

Spending time with family
“You can see the city all lit up at night.  There’s a piano and we all sing carols. I don’t know where in Baltimore you could get any better,” Wareheim says.

William Brooks and his wife Mary will spend Thanksgiving with their whole family at their Oak Crest home this year. Their daughter is flying in from California and their two sons will visit from White Marsh and Conowingo.

“We’re looking forward to spending time with everyone at our home this Thanksgiving,” he says. “This is a new tradition for us. It’ll be only the second time we’ve all been together since my wife and I moved to Oak Crest.”

Holiday travel
Mooney says the dining rooms at Oak Crest and Charlestown feature special holiday menus for Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. Joe Frey plans to visit relatives for the holidays, but he says he’ll be sure to return home in time for the festive holiday dinners at Charlestown.

“We sit at a table with the same seven people every night for dinner, and we feel like family. We eat together for holiday dinners and have a wonderful time,” he says.

Instead of visiting family, Gene Quinn usually travels from his home at  Charlestown to Rome and the Italian Alps. “I do a lot of mountain climbing,” he says, “and I spend the time with myself.”

Jean McNab, who has lived at Charlestown for the past 18 years, also has  some special travel plans this holiday season. In December she will visit her son in the Bahamas. “It’s my birthday present,” she says. Then she will head to North Carolina for her grandson’s wedding in January.

Though McNab will be visiting her daughter in Pennsylvania for Thanksgiving and Christmas, she won’t miss out on the festivities. “They make it very festive here. We have decorations all around and lots of holiday programs such as when the school children come and sing,” she says.

Festive atmosphere
“We spend about a week decorating for all the special events around the holidays,” Nowak says. “Our team really puts a lot of effort into it.”

“We decorate the Garden Room with poinsettias, wreaths, and other holiday decorations. And the dining rooms at Oak Crest are also decorated all season,” Mooney says.

From food to decorations, Frey says, “The dining services staff really outshine themselves during the holidays.”
