Where are you going this winter?

If you lived at Charlestown, it wouldn’t be a question of ‘Where are,’ but ‘where aren’t you going this winter or any season for that matter?’

“We’ve been to Branson, Missouri, Williamsburg, Virginia, Radio City Music Hall, the Panama Canal, Quebec, California, The Mexican Riviera and many other places,” says Nancy Ward who organizes the Charlestown travel group, the Happy Wanderers.

Bitten by the travel bug
Bill Davis, a seasoned traveler who lives at Charlestown attended the Branson trip along with Nancy and his Charlestown neighbors.

“I enjoyed it, it was very interesting,” says Bill, who has traveled Europe and visited every state in America. “I was in the army when I toured Europe. And then I traveled a lot for business. I would always take my wife with me and make time at the end of the trip to do some sightseeing. Since I moved to Charlestown I’ve been on four cruises and every year I go to Sunfest in Ocean City, Maryland.  I would love to go back to the Grand Canyon or Hawaii—they’re both such amazing places.”

Nancy was also bitten by the travel bug years before moving to Charlestown. “I moved to Charlestown 13 years ago. But before that, my husband and I traveled all over the world. We’ve been to Hong Kong, New Zealand, Australia, England–lots of wonderful places. My favorite was a cruise we took to Greece. It was a beautiful, captivating place–just marvelous!”

This past spring Nancy and 50 fellow Charlestown travelers went on a four night, five day road trip to Wildwood, New Jersey.

“When you travel in a group you can get really good deals,” says Nancy. “This particular trip was very affordable and included two meals each day, show tickets, and a trip to Cape May.”

Walter Wode was only recently bit by the “bug” but has already been on 15 trips since moving to Charlestown three years ago.

“I traveled very little before I moved here,” says Walter. “I enjoy it. But I really enjoy traveling in a group because you get to meet people and talk about different things. I’d really like to take a cruise. I’m waiting to see what’s coming up next,” he says.

It’s all in the planning
Pre-travel meetings are held before each trip to discuss departure times, what to bring, and any other loose ends that might need to be covered.

“Meeting ahead of time lets people get aquatinted and keeps everybody up to date with what is going on,” says Nancy. “When we’re organizing the trip I usually like to have dinner with everyone. Then right before we leave for the trip or as soon as we get to our destination, I usually have a happy hour with beer and wine so people can mingle and get to know one another. For our bus trips I like to have lunches prepared at the Short Line (Charlestown’s café style restaurant) to take with us. That way we don’t have to keep stopping on the road,” she says.

The Wanderers also frequently rely on a travel agency to take care of details.

“We’ve used some very good travel agents to help us plan our trips. Many times they know about deals and travel specials,” says Nancy.

Nancy is busy planning trips through the year 2007. A cruise to Nova Scotia in September is a sure thing and plans for Williamsburg and New Orleans are good possibilities.

“Ideally I would like to do two cruises a year. But people are a little worried about traveling by boat during the hurricane season after Katrina,” says Nancy. “I like taking people to places where they can experience something different. Cruises are a very economical and convenient way to travel. You get to spend your days traveling on a boat enjoying the amenities and then you just walk right off and you’re at your destination.”
