Couple finds Charlestown was good fit right from the start

For Sal and Mary Glorioso moving to Charlestown was a dream come true.

“We watched as Charlestown grew from the very beginning when we lived in Arbutus,” says Mary. “But when we first saw it we were still in our forties and weren’t ready to move. But we thought about it for our future. Over the years we had looked at other places, but Charlestown was always in the back of our minds. It’s such a gorgeous, wonderful place. We finally moved to Charlestown in March 2006 and we still think to ourselves, ‘are we really living here or is this just a dream?’”

Welcome home
Sal, a Bethlehem Steel retiree, and Mary, a retired middle school art teacher of 27 years, felt at home at Charlestown from day one.

“Our neighbors and the staff are very friendly,” says Mary. “Our apartment is ideal and the conveniences are remarkable. Everything we need is within climatecontrolled walking distance from our apartment or just a short drive away. We both have our own cars and still drive but sometimes it’s more convenient not to. For example, if we’re going to Washington D.C. we’ll ride the MARC train to Union Station, have breakfast and hop on the DC Circulator [a bus service] or Metro. It’s really a lot of fun. We’ve also learned how to use the MTA buses if we want to go to downtown Baltimore and not drive,” she says.

On the go
The active couple didn’t waste any time getting involved when they moved into their home. “We joined a walking club here in the community and we’ve been attending on-site seminars, concerts, book reviews, and film screenings,” says Mary. “We’re also doing a wonderful Elderhostel trip to New York City soon. There are countless activities if you want to be active physically, mentally, spiritually, culturally, or socially. You’re free to do as much or as little as you choose.”

As for Mary and Sal, they chose the “do as much” category. Mary volunteers at Our Lady of Victory School as well as teaches a calligraphy class at Charlestown. And Sal dabbles in photography.

“I learned calligraphy when I was a nun for 18 years,” she says. “I still use it frequently today to make cards and address letters. Sometimes we’ll take one of his photos and we’ll use it and make a card for birthdays, anniversaries, and such.”

Still when it comes down to it, this vivacious couple appreciates the simple things in life.

“I think the best thing about living at Charlestown is the wonderful quality of life both physically and socially we enjoy,” says Mary. “When you consider the other options that are out there, this is the very best!” says Sal.
