Grand illumination celebration lights up the Baltimore skyline

Posted on Tuesday, December 12, 2006

PARKVILLE, MD – The eleventh grand illumination at Oak Crest lit up the Baltimore skyline on Friday, December 8. Residents, staff, families, and friends took part in the 90-minute event to celebrate the start of the holiday season.

Under the direction of Sally Horner, the Oak Crest Chorus opened the event with a selection of holiday music and led the audience in a sing-along. The highlight of the evening was a specially scripted holiday show by nationally known puppeteer Jack Foreaker. Both children and adults were delighted by the antics of the life-size puppets.

“The grand illumination at Oak Crest has become a tradition for our residents and staff,” said Diana Brooks, community resources manager. “The annual lighting ceremony brings together the Oak Crest ‘family’ to celebrate the true meaning of the holiday season.”

Led by Jim Truitt, senior community services manager, a group of residents presented words of illumination from various faiths, including Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Quaker, Moslem, and Unitarian. As the lights in Crestview Hall were dimmed, the audience was asked to hold up their candles and sing “Let There Be Peace On Earth.”

As the song ended, the tens of thousands of lights on the campus came on. From the roof lines of the neighborhood buildings, to the split rail fence surrounding the pond, to the trees around campus, the spectacular display of Christmas lights lit of the Baltimore County skyline.

“It looks like a fairy land,” said 11-year old Lori. (Jane Powell)
