Marion Almquist and Carol Smith inducted into Maryland Senior Hall of Fame

Posted on Friday, November 03, 2006

PARKVILLE, MD – In a ceremony held on October 26 in Glen Burnie, Md., two Oak Crest residents were inducted into the Maryland Senior Hall of Fame for 2006. The Hall of Fame annually recognizes people who have had an impact on the community and their peers. In addition to the certificates they received at the luncheon ceremony, Almquist and Smith will be listed in the prestigious Maryland Blue Book, which recognizes exemplary service by older adults in the state.

Marion Almquist arrived at Oak Crest in April 1999 and her presence has been felt since then. She has been an active participant in all things musical and theatrical. She dances, sings, plays the piano, acts as impromptu chorus director and takes part in the various productions held on campus. An integral part of every major production by the Oak Crest Village Vaudevillians, Almquist has devoted many hours to creating musical arrangements, rehearsing the cast and serving as an accompanist for each production. In addition, she has given of her talents as an actress and vocalist, having performed in nearly every production since 1999.

“Marion is a pleasure to know, and a fabulous volunteer at Oak Crest Village. She always lends a hand when one is needed, and never flinches to make what one would think impossible, possible. Marion’s talent and enthusiasm is shared by everyone at Oak Crest,” says Diana Brooks, community resources manager.

In addition, Almquist volunteers as a pianist for Protestant services in the assisted living facility at Oak Crest and acts as assistant director for the Protestant choir. Her other activities include the Oak Crest Chorus, Independence Day Parade Committee, Hand Bell Choir, Media Arts Group and Oak Crest Pianists. Since coming to Oak Crest, Almquist has been able to use her years of training and employment at the Peabody Conservatory of Music to help others enjoy music in their lives.

Carol Smith has been a “mover and shaker” since moving into Oak Crest in May 1997. An avid on campus volunteer, Smith is dedicated to bringing worship services to Renaissance Gardens at Oak Crest. Smith visits the residents weekly and plays the piano for Protestant worship services. Her courage, compassion and empathy are shown by her willingness to bring religious music to those who are unable to go to the chapel for services. An active member of the Protestant choir, Smith volunteers weekly to play the piano for Wednesday evening services.

“Carol is often the ‘right hand’ for many of our volunteers at Oak Crest. She works with various groups to bring music into the lives of our residents. Her musical talents and religious devotion bring joy to many in our community,” says Jeannie Sikorsky, community resources coordinator.

The various theatrical productions at Oak Crest, hand bell choir, resident-staff chorus and Media Arts Group are among the many volunteer groups at Oak Crest who benefit from Smith’s many talents. She has never been known to say “no” to a piano accompanist request.

Almquist and Smith are among the 18 Oak Crest residents who have been inducted into the Maryland Senior Hall of Fame since 1997. Other include: Irene Eaton (1997), Joe Leary (1997), Peg Leary (1997), Gene Foster (1999), Mary Jane Foster (1999), Helen Davis (1999), Irma Seitz (1999), Jean Foster (2000), Gladys Reed (2000), Ruth Pundt (2001), Kitty Hughes (2002), Bettye Griffin (2002), Zed Hrubec (2003), Margaret Ingram (2004), Tom Foster (2005), and Lee Lahet (2005).
