Community comes together as 'Graham’s Guardians'

Posted on Friday, November 03, 2006

PARKVILLE, MD – Maureen Hulse has been a resident services coordinator at Oak Crest for over five years. Her three-year-old son, Graham, was diagnosed with a rare blood cancer (acute lymphocytic leukemia) in June of 2005. Since then, Maureen’s co-workers at Oak Crest have shown their kindness and support of her and her family though a variety of ways, including donating paid time off (PTO) so that Maureen could be with her son during the most critical phases of his chemotherapy, making frozen meals for her family, and offering their prayers daily for Graham’s recovery.

Their most recent gift of support was helping Maureen and her family raise close to $8,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Maryland through the Light The Night Walk in Bel Air, Md. Over 30 staff members of Oak Crest made up the walking team “Graham’s Guardians” for the October 7 fundraiser. Many more of Maureen’s co-workers donated their time through fundraising efforts of their own, to raise monies for this most important cause, and even more members of the community’s staff offered their own financial donations.

Maureen and her family are so incredibly grateful for their “Oak Crest family” and feel extremely fortunate that she works in such a wonderfully compassionate community. (Ann Walsh)
