Charlestown Executive Director Mike Conord: “Now THAT’S service!”

Posted on Thursday, October 12, 2006

CATONSVILLE, MD – It was after 9 p.m. and Charlestown Communications Specialist Nicole Saunders had already closed down the front desk and was ready to head for home after a busy shift. At that moment, the automatic lobby doors opened and in walked a couple exhausted and hungry after a five-hour plane ride from California. They were visitors to the campus here for an interview the next day. Upon receiving the guest room key from Nicole, they asked if there was anywhere nearby to get something to eat. Naturally, all of the campus restaurants were closed, but she knew a local restaurant that might still be open and recommended it.

When the couple asked about getting a cab, Nicole wouldn’t hear of it and called the shuttle, which was still running. Unfortunately, it would take the shuttle a half-hour to pick them up and it would be shut down before the return trip. They’d have to get a cab home.

Nicole, not totally sure if it was allowed, decided to offer the couple a ride herself to make sure they got there and back safely. Arriving at Kibby’s, they were disappointed to find the restaurant closed for the night. That’s what Nicole was supposed to be!

Undaunted, Nicole kept thinking of options. When the couple suggested the KFC that they had seen on the way from Charlestown, our star employee felt uneasy, having been warned by a friend of the unsavory atmosphere there. Pressing on, she took them to the Giant supermarket, where the couple was able to get a satisfying stock of freshly prepared foods that hit the spot exactly. She then returned them, happy and grateful, to the Cross Creek lobby, and finally proceeded home at 10 p.m.

Only an employee who was internally wired with the Erickson Way mission and values would go to this length to provide such exceptional customer service to a campus visitor. Nicole Saunders doesn’t just have a job; she is on a mission. And that night, she could head for home with the “mission accomplished.” (Mike Conord)
