Erickson: Team of employees from Maryland compete in biannual boat races

Posted on Tuesday, September 12, 2006

BALTIMORE, MD – A team of 24 Erickson employees participated in the Catholic Charities Dragon Boat Races held in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor this past Saturday. This is the third time Erickson has been part of the biannual event.

This year’s team was made up of employees from Charlestown, Oak Crest, Riderwood, the Erickson Foundation, and the Erickson corporate office, and was headed by team captain Matt Rosewag, assistant administrator of Renaissance Gardens at Riderwood, and co-captains Samantha Appler, senior health systems analyst, and Jen Barbieri, Oak Crest project manager.

Team members were Courtney Luckert, Teresa Reymann, and Kathleen Seitz of Charlestown; Ladonna Jackson of Oak Crest; Jeff Bowers of Riderwood; Yu-Ling Shao of The Erickson Foundation; and Carla Beckford, Justin Blome, Sue Brammer, Carrie Anne Deters, Neal Gantert, Matt Gump, Julia Lapp, Mon Lau, Edmond Magny, Renee Olsen, Gale Samborne, Leah Scanlon, Phil Shockley, Michelle Sullivan, and Jan Walecka of Corporate.

They competed against 29 teams representing other local companies, universities, and non-profits in replicas of ancient Chinese dragon boats, which resemble long canoes that hold 20 paddlers, a drummer, and a steersman, and have colorful dragon heads and tails on either end. The race course is 400 meters, and Erickson competed in three heats.

“I’m not sure what place we came in overall, but it was a beautiful day,” says Rosewag, “and we had a lot of supporters there. And we raised just under $1,000 for St. Ann’s, so all in all, it was a great day and a great event. Thanks to all who supported the team by purchasing raffle tickets and eating at Chevy’s during our fundraiser there last month."

To enter the race, Erickson donated $10,000 to Catholic Charities. The Erickson team also partners with St. Ann Adult Day Services, one of Catholic Charities’ many agencies – a medical day program that provides activities for older adults at risk of nursing home placement, helping them to stay at home and avoid isolation, while allowing caregivers necessary respite. The Erickson team’s fundraising efforts directly benefit St. Ann’s clients.

Members of the team also volunteer at St. Ann a few times each year – planting flowers with clients in the garden, playing bingo, and hosting a Fourth of July picnic in the summer and a caregiver’s breakfast in the fall.

“The reason I keep coming back and doing this is St. Ann,” says Sue Brammer, an executive assistant and office manager in Erickson development who was on the Erickson dragon boat team in 2002, 2004, and again this year, “They are a great organization and are so appreciative [of us]. I also just like being part of the Erickson team; the excitement and that feeling of ‘maybe this year we can win.’”

“It’s not often you can have this much fun and raise money for such a great cause,” adds Advertising Director Gale Samborne, who was new to the team this year. “We're already looking forward to ... 2008.” (Kate Newton)
