Looking for a way to kick off this Memorial Day? Why not get in touch with your artistic side. This month Charlestown is hosting its 16th Annual Art Show … with a twist—this year’s show will also include works by Lansdowne Elementary School students.

Nearly 50 Charlestown artists, along with more than 50 Lansdowne students grades Kindergarten through 5 will showcase their artwork in celebration of Older American’s Month.

The art show is one of a handful of events being planned and hosted by Charlestown’s Community Resources Department.

Something for Everyone

“So many people explore new interests when they move to Charlestown; this is one event that allows them to show off their newfound talents,” says Mary Evans, Senior Community Services Manager.

This year’s show includes a variety of mediums from acrylic, oil, and watercolor painting to photography, and sculptures in clay, metal, stone, wood, drawings in charcoal, pastels, pen & ink, and pencil, as well as stained glass and collage. The show will also include a special element titled Art Blooms which includes elaborate floral interpretations of the artwork created by Charlestown’s Garden Club.

Lansdowne art teacher Nancy Martin will select which student’s artwork will be displayed in the show.

“I’m trying to present an overview of our art program,” says Nancy. There are some other reasons I’ve selected a particular child’s work. Some children who do not posses a lot of art ability or creativity often do very well in crafts, such as stitching and weaving. I like to highlight their work as well to give them a bit of the spotlight and emphasize that you don’t have to be an ‘artist’ to do something well.”

Mary and her colleagues met with Charlestown’s Bridging Generations group and agreed that this would be an opportunity for a one of a kind learning experience for the children. Bridging Generations is a group of 52 men and women from Charlestownwho volunteer as teacher’s aides, help with after school programs, and exchange letters as part of a pen pal program at Lansdowne.

“There are plans to include special one-on-one walking tours throughout the event (Charlestown artists partnering with students to give tours) and educational information packets will be distributed,” says Mary.

The show will take place in Charlestown’s John Erickson Conference Center and runs from May 25 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and May 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The show is open to the general public and admission if free.

Art = Enjoyment for Life

“The kids seem very enthusiastic,” says Nancy Martin. “Most of them  know at least one of the volunteers from Charlestown. They especially are thrilled about going to the show to see their work displayed.”

Students and their parents are invited to attend the evening wine and cheese reception.

“Charlestown is providing a bus to bring all of the students who are participating to the show. I hope that our older students will stand by and talk to people about their artwork,” says Nancy. “After the show, I’m looking forward to hearing the children’s responses about the artwork. I hope that they will see that art can provide enjoyment for life,” she says.
