“It doesn’t hurt to put a deposit down. That way if you decide Charlestown is right for you, you can move when you’re ready. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait years for the apartment you want to become available. And if you decide not to move, you get your money back.”
Brooks and Joan Hubbert from Towson
It didn’t take much to convince Brooks and Joan Hubbert that Oak Crest was the perfect place for their new home.
“Joan’s dad lived at Charlestown and we were already familiar with Erickson’s amenities and the community,” says Brooks. “So when we heard they were building Oak Crest on this side of town we knew it was where wanted to be. We were on the waiting list for a Manchester apartment for two years and finally we decided to choose another two-bedroom, two-bath, floor plan, the Hawthorne. We were ready to move and worried a Manchester may not become available for a long time,” he says.
“We’re very happy with our home. We’re on the top floor where we have a great view. We love watching the birds, and the cloud formations, and we’re close to our favorite restaurant, Windows. Plus, we love having the freedom from household chores,” says Brooks.
Brooks, a certified public account and Joan, a calligraphist, found Oak Crest comparable to what they were already spending to live in their house.
“When you figure in what we paid for insurance, upkeep on the house, utilities, plus food, there really isn’t a significant difference from our house to Oak Crest,” says Brooks.
Brooks still works part-time as a financial manager, walks three miles every day, teaches a computer class, is taking college courses on campus, and has a large collection of Maryland history books. In addition to calligraphy, Joan has learned to watercolor paint, plays Pinochle, and directs Charlestown’s 22-member hand bell choir.
“If you can’t find something to interest you here, I’d be surprised,” says Brooks. “There are great opportunities to volunteer and get involved in clubs, and groups. We’re just as busy now as we were before we retired,” he says.
“It’s a great life. We feel privileged to have discovered and moved to Oak Crest while we are still young and healthy enough to enjoy it,” adds Joan.
