“It’s not about skill,” says Doris Ruemmler. “It’s just for recreation.”

But while the competition may not get too serious, all who participate in Cedar Crest’s weekly golf outings agree it’s a great way to get out and get together with friends and neighbors.

According to Dr. Peter Cataldi, Cedar Crest’s wellness manager, the golf outings run from the end of April to as late as November, depending on the weather.

“I post a sheet at the Fitness Center, and people sign up on a first-come, first-served basis,” says Peter. “We usually cut it off at 12 people, or three foursomes.” Peter estimates that about 20 people in total participate during the year.

“Some people are pretty regular, and others participate on a more occasional basis,” he says. “There are also golfers at Cedar Crest who still have their golf club memberships or access to other courses.”

Deer Run

Those who sign up for the weekly golf outing meet at the Fitness Center on Thursday morning, divide themselves up into groups, and carpool to the Deer Run golf course, about 10 miles away in Lincoln Park.

“It’s a nice course,” says Doris—and she should know. Before moving to Cedar Crest three and a half years ago, Doris had a condominium at Deer Run, which in addition to having a 9-hole course is also a residential community. It’s because of her that Cedar Crest’s golfers are able to play at Deer Run.

“Doris was friendly with the managers of the golf course and suggested that we contact them,” says Peter. “We did, and that’s how our relationship began. They give us their preferred rate for one morning a week, which is Thursday.”

“It’s a good morning,” says Bill Hayes, another Cedar Crest golfer. “When we drive up, they already have the golf carts there for us. If we get there at nine-thirty, we’re probably out of there by twelve.” Bill says although it’s nine holes, it’s a regular course. “The second and third holes are probably the toughest,” he says. “There’s a lot of water on them.”

Putting Green

In keeping with Cedar Crest’s efforts to optimize its recreational opportunities, a seven-hole putting green was installed last summer off the Belmont Clubhouse Courtyard. “It wasn’t completed until late in the season, but this year I expect it to get a lot of use,” says Peter.

In fact, last month several of Cedar Crest’s golfers and members of the public matched skills in a special putting tournament, during Cedar Crest’s May 25 “Summer Kick-Off” Open House.

Made of synthetic fibers that closely simulate real turf, the durable green is perfect for golfers looking to practice putting skills, as well as visiting grandchildren and others just looking to have fun.
