POMPTON PLAINS, NJ – On May 23, in an effort to help promote driving safety, Cedar Crest and its Elderhostel-affiliated Institute for Learning in Retirement program invited the AAA New Jersey Automobile Club to hold a safe-driving workshop, designed to help residents who operate automobiles.
The program was part of AAA’s “CarFit” campaign, which educates older Americans on the importance of various driving related issues including, proper seating, seat belt usage and correct adjustment of the steering wheel, mirrors and head rests. Approximately 20 residents took part in the program, which was also aimed at improving roadway visibility for drivers.
Cedar Crest Executive Director Chip Warner said, “CarFit is an important program because it helps to promote driving safety for our residents here at Cedar Crest. Nationwide, there are 28 million senior drivers on the roads and we are very thankful to AAA for helping to promote and educate good techniques for those in our own community.”
The Institute for Learning in Retirement program was brought to Cedar Crest in August 2006, by resident Marge Wyngaarden. Cedar Crest is the first retirement community in the nation to form an affiliation with Elderhostel, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities for older adults.
The AAA New Jersey Automobile Club, through offices in Clark, Florham Park, Randolph, Springfield and West Orange, provides automotive, travel, insurance, legislative and educational services to the residents of Essex, Morris and Union Counties. (Tony Ciavolella)
