Roving Reporter Question

Posted on Saturday, January 27, 2007

February is “sweeps month,” when TV programmers go all out to boost viewer ratings for their particular shows. The Tribune randomly asked people at Cedar Crest, “What kind of programs do you like or what would you like to see more of?”

Bill Sperry
“As I understand the rating system, it looks at the college students; it looks at the 25 to 40 group, but it sort of ignores the older people. So programming all gets skewed toward the younger generation. I’d like to see more educational programs, news programs that weren’t all bad news, mostly programs that would improve my knowledge and my lifestyle—some of the things the new Erickson network is working on.”

Dolly Periu
“I can’t stand the reality shows; they really have to go. I don’t watch a lot of television, but there are some very good shows that I like. I’m waiting for “24” to start. And I like CSI—the original one, which is filmed in Las Vegas. I also watch CNN.”

Abe Goodman
“It’s very nice to see good family shows. Just yesterday I was watching Jackie Gleason and Art Carney. That was what you call shows! But not what they have today. It’s a pity that they waste so much money making these junky shows that grown up people don’t even care to see. Usually, I see the weather in the morning, then the news, and that’s all. My wife and I don’t care for anything else that’s on.”

Joe Locarro
“I don’t watch too much television, but I like Boston Legal, and Desperate Housewives, and I used to like Jag. It’s not on the air anymore. Outside of those programs, I really don’t have the time. A couple shows, that’s it. And there’s too much violence.”
