Wonderful nearby winter destinations for people in North Jersey

By Jeff Ostroth
THE ERICKSON TRIBUNE

Well, here we are in January, with nearly three more months to go before spring. Until then, we can only look forward to that leisurely stroll along a nature trail, a round of golf, or puttering in the garden.

In the meantime, most of us would rather be somewhere a little warmer—not cooped up in our houses all the time!

A lively winter
For those who live at Cedar Crest, the good news is that plenty of enjoyable things are happening right on the campus of this all-weather community. Thanks to enclosed climatecontrolled walkways that connect the entire campus, harsh winter weather never keeps people from meeting friends for lunch or dinner, attending group activities, or exercising at the pool or fitness center.

When the weather’s not threatening, there are also plenty of places within reach of Cedar Crest that make for a great day trip.

The cities always beckon
With New York’s midtown only 27 miles away, the transportation department offers a number of Big Apple outings. Nearly every month, says transportation coordinator Tom Fox, it runs a bus to New York’s “Museum Mile,” a stretch along 5th Avenue with nine museums.

It also offers trips to Radio City Music Hall, Lincoln Center, and South Street Seaport, to name some of its other New York destinations.

Resident-run excursions
Many trips at Cedar Crest are organized by residents. Irma and Julius Cohn organize about ten New York theater trips a year.

And Tom Laura arranges an Atlantic City excursion nearly every month, through Cedar Crest’s Trips and Travel Club.

Just the beginning
But you don’t have to go into the city to enjoy music, theater, art, dining, and more. While Cedar Crest’s Trips and Travel Club is best known for its group vacations—they’re taking a Panama Canal cruise next month—they also sponsor day trips, says Betty Flanagan, who runs the club along with Lucille Joseph. None are scheduled until spring, but some of them would make excellent winter getaways as well.

“They’re all within an easy drive from Cedar Crest,” says Ruth Ellerthorpe, who is planning day trips for Trips and Travel. “Many of the trips I’ve chosen are up in the Hudson Valley, as we’re very close to the New York border here.”

There are a lot of great places to go right around here, agrees Tom. Here are some of the wonderful local events and attractions you can enjoy this winter. Not all are Cedar Crest trips.
