Community celebrates its first five years with a three-day fest

Posted on Tuesday, November 07, 2006

POMPTON PLAINS, NJ – Cedar Crest recently held a three-day anniversary celebration called “Cedar Fest.” Hundreds of Cedar Crest’s more than 1,200 residents and 700 employees turned out to celebrate the momentous occasion of Cedar Crest’s five-year anniversary.

The celebration began with a festive street fair, complete with Boardwalk games such as a shooting gallery, quarterback toss, “froggy fling,” and baseball toss. Guests also threw darts at balloons, and tried their hands at sand art and spin art.

“This is the first time I have felt like a kid again in a very long time,” exclaimed a joyous Shirley Keller, who lives at Cedar Crest. “I remember my children doing things like this, but this is my first time,” she added.

Upstairs, participants meandered through vendor tables of jewelry, pocket books, hats, knitted items, and holiday decorations. Many purchased early holiday gifts for loved ones and even for themselves.

“I love being able to eat and shop at the same time,” said resident Arlene Bezem.

On Saturday night, the community hosted a Monte Carlo night celebration, which was also a blast. From gambling with “funny money” and dancing to the delicious food, everyone really enjoyed themselves. Cedar Crest resident Anna Gortych said that she loved listening and dancing to the Joseph Giacci Swing Band.

The interfaith chapel dedication on Sunday capped off the three-day extravaganza. Residents from all faiths were invited by lottery to attend the event, which took place in Cedar Crest’s brand new 300-seat interfaith chapel.

“We had a great turnout despite of the late night spent at Monte Carlo night,” said resident Ann Verrico, chairperson of the interfaith anniversary committee. “This service was especially meaningful because it brought members of all faiths under one roof to celebrate this wonderful occasion together.”

Representatives from the Jewish, Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Christian faiths did readings.

“We celebrated our five years together through an interfaith service, which showcased some of our talented residents including Jerry Landsman, who played the violin; Shirley Keller, who played the guitar; pianists Bill Baker and Carol Steinborn; and soloist Bill Twardzik,” said Verrico.

“Bill Twardzik’s singing was magnificent,” said resident Nicki Wallin. “It was a perfect ending to three great days of celebrating Cedar Crest’s five-year anniversary.” (Jackie Schatell)
