With year-round courses, community is a classroom that never closes

By Chris Yakaitis

School may be out for the summer, but at Brooksby Village the spirit of lifelong learning rolls on throughout the season. From computer classes to fitness courses to informational forums, the numerous educational opportunities on campus allow community members to continually increase their knowledge—without even leaving home.

Connecting with Computers

Brooksby’s technologically savvy residents can expand their skills through a variety of classes in computer use. “We’re experiencing a real demand for instruction,” says Community Resources Coordinator Laurie McCracken.

In response, the community is offering courses in the computer lab that cover topics such as sending and receiving e-mails, searching the Internet, touch-typing on the computer keyboard, digital photography, and using Microsoft Word. The lab also hosts an introduction to genealogy course that utilizes the numerous resources available on the World Wide Web.

“People said they were interested in as many things as we could offer!” Laurie says.

Learning to Feel Great

Those looking to stay in top shape throughout the summer months can take advantage of several health and wellness classes. Brooksby’s personal trainers lead strength-training sessions at the state-of-the-art Fitness Center. And at the Exercise Room in Kingsbury Clubhouse, resident can enroll in classes on aerobics, stretching, Pilates, and Tai Chi.

In addition, Wellness Coordinator Rick DiScipio leads a “stability ball” class that provides a unique and highly beneficial workout. “They’re great to build stomach, abdominal, and lower back strength, and great for balance,” he says.

For those looking to work out and cool off, the all-season Aquatics Center hosts water walking, water aerobics, and Ai Chi courses that help develop flexibility.

Brooksby residents recently enjoyed another seminar in the community’s “Live and Learn” series of educational forums. June’s event, “Prince Estabrook—Slave and Soldier,” explored the history of the Revolutionary War’s first black soldier.

Resident chairperson Dave Brigham notes that the “Live and Learn” forums typically draw between 75 and 125 Brooksby residents, whose interests and curiosity run from history and culture to current events. “They’re interested in keeping tuned in with the world,” Dave says. “This is a very active community.”

Even more classes will be offered this fall. But in the meantime, community members eager to engage their minds and energies have plenty of options throughout the summer months. The various educational opportunities at Brooksby mean you can go “back to school” all year long.
